New Ken Wilson Interview (Part 1)

Post by TBone »

The great Ken Wilson is interviewed by arena announcer Tom Calhoun talking life, pucks and his career.

Part one of two dropping last night and then later today, I believe. Enjoy.

Thanks for the link, TBone. Great stuff!

I had moved from STL to Dayton OH in 1981. That’s Cincy Reds country, of course. It was also the early days of the boom in cable TV broadcasting. My wife & I paid for our first cable TV subscription and on the Reds cable TV network they had this young announcer named Ken Wilson.

Anyway, I thought that Wilson had promise as a baseball announcer at that time. Then a couple years later, I started seeing him on Blues broadcasts when I visited my family back in STL. Personally, I always thought Ken was a better baseball broadcaster than hockey, although he was good at hockey, too.

Looking forward to the second half of the podcast.

While there, I just listened to the podcast with John Kelly and Dan Kelly “Jr” talking about their legendary dad, Dan Kelly. As a Blues fan since 1968, that one was great to listen to.

(The legendary Dan Kelly was Patrick Daniel Kelly. His youngest son is Daniel Patrick Kelly, so not truly a “Jr”).

IMO Ken Wilson with Joe Micheletti was the greatest duo we've ever had calling Blues games. Joe's superb analysis and hockey knowledge paired with Ken's stellar play by play along with his "Oh Baby" tag line when we scored a goal was just flat amazing...

Joe Micheletti was superb. Too bad that he didn’t get to broadcast with Dan Kelly. That would have been outstanding.

I thought Ken Wilson was very good, definitely a keeper, but his voice often sounded strained compared to Dan Kelly or “Early” John Kelly.

IMO, JK has lost a bit in the last couple of years due to age (and perhaps lingering effects of COVID which hit him pretty hard).

Good interview. People seem to keep that passion for the Blues org even after they leave.
