Anyone believe Carbonneau is close?
I like the Carbonneau pick. I think that he has great potential. However, I didn't see a player in prospect camp that is NHL-ready. He looked like a green bean, not the best player out there 100% of the time.
I'm particularly stunned by Army's NHL-tomorrow handling of Carbonneau. The 2023 and 2024 prospects have been painfully slow-walked by Army, and now with Carbonneau it's the exact opposite. Carbonneau is getting the rush-job.
I'm curious. Does anyone see/believe that Carbonneau is ready for the NHL this year?

You realize the blues can not make him go to college. The STL Blues do not dictate JC decision. He is free to choose his path. If hes going to juniors and wants to come to camp then he is welcome. Thats JC’s decision. Not army,a smell of green grass wrote: ↑16 Jul 2025 15:06 pm I like the Carbonneau pick. I think that he has great potential. Army made him go to camp to fast or army didnt give him a fair chance. You grind that line better than the girls at country rock.

I don't think that anybody that was drafted in 2025 could hold down a spot on the Blues roster next season...it's a fantasy.

Army said essentially the same thing about Dvorsky coming to camp last summer. The odds on Carbonneau making the team out of camp are very low, too low to hold any expectations in that regard.

Carbonneau may get a handful of games at the NHL level this season, but I don't think he'll be ready until the 26-27 season. I don't think there's any upside to rushing him with the number of talented wingers we have.

Re: Anyone believe Carbonneau is close?
Ok. It seems that we have consensus that Carbonneau is not NHL-ready at the moment, and likely not this year. He needs more playing experience as well as skate time, etc. And to repeat, this is not a dig on Carbonneau. It's just being realistic.
So all this being the case....
Why is Army telling the fans that Carbonneau is really advanced and ready to try the next step? He is not doing that with the other recent prospects.
Anybody have a thought on why Armstrong is chirping like this? I can't imagine he sees Carbonneau as ready any more than we do.

Re: Anyone believe Carbonneau is close?
It's not hypocrisy to treat different players differently. Snuggy would not have been this ready straight after being picked, and it's the rare prospect who steps in at 18 and contributes on an NHL roster. Perron got the 9 game trial and stuck; Petro got it and went back to juniors twice. Sometimes it's useful if a player is physically capable of handling the NHL (and with Carbonneau's speed and size he could probably hang for some games as is) to get them a feel for how much faster the game is at this level. The team knows the player isn't ready. But the player has to feel it by getting a little taste.
More likely than not what happens is he gets a couple of preseason games and then goes back to junior. But he's hungry to stick so they're leaving the door cracked, that's all Armstrong's comments are. He isn't publicly shutting the kid's hopes down. Reality is going to take care of that.
Then he will go back to Bavaroise-Bloinbilleneuve where they will have a strong team. They have a 5'10" LHD named Xavier Ouellet who is an early top 15 pick for next year. They expect to contend for a Q title and possible Memorial Cup. He will possibly play in the world juniors. I thought I saw someone point out he can go to the AHL the year after that. Once he's in the AHL it's a simple call-up situation once he's ready. It would be very surprising if he made the team out of camp but he has the kind of brash talent and intention about making it that's hard not to notice.

It would be pretty hard to determine if a 18 year old was ready to make the step until you saw him on the ice with NHL players. Don't get me wrong, I love the idea of seeing 18 year olds make a roster but its tough.

Here is one article. I'm sure that there are others. You don't remember hearing that the Blues think that the kid has a shot at making the club soon?STL fan in MN wrote: ↑16 Jul 2025 16:34 pmCan you provide a link to this quote, please?a smell of green grass wrote: ↑16 Jul 2025 16:27 pmWhy is Army telling the fans that Carbonneau is really advanced and ready to try the next step?

Not everybody is cut out for college - but I do wish he would have gone the BC route. Seemed as if he'd done everything he could in the Q.
But who knows .. maybe he wants to win a Memorial Cup. And staying in Jrs. gives him a chance to get to the N. He'll know more about where he stands when he gets through his first camp. So will the team.

IMO, I would be shocked if he wasn’t at one point this season in the AHL. That alone should be considered a huge step for a Junior hockey player.bud white wrote: ↑16 Jul 2025 16:57 pm Not everybody is cut out for college - but I do wish he would have gone the BC route. Will he be old enough to play in the AHL for the 26-27 season?
