Looking forward to the duce take on draft

Post by hugeCardfan »

I find it interesting that of the first 16 or so picks all but one are college players. Tells me they want ML leaning players and some negotiating room. I’ve decided to love the Doyle pick and wait for my duce analysis.

Not to speak for Duce by any means, but based on some of his comments I've read, I think he has concerns with Doyle as our first pick. Doesn't hate it, just feels like there is too large a chance his ceiling ends up a reliever as opposed to a starter. Otherwise, I think he generally liked how we drafted

what TLR said. I have concerns with Doyle. But he was part of my 5 "Wouldn't be Upset" picks. Wasn't one of 5 favorites. I love the Mitchell and Weingartner picks. I'm intrigued alot by Nickens and Franklin...we'll see how they play out. Rooting hard for Franklin to succeed as a starter.

I like the athletic persona of most of our offensive picks, they can move anywhere where needed. I like the stature of all the picks...it's a Tall draft.

The pitchers....most can bring the heat, some bring control. I"m a control guy who wants to see miss pitches....I think we answered quite a bit of that this draft.

I was looking forward to your read as well, Duce. Thanks.
I think we kicked some serious asz, very un-FO like picks. I like the Franklin ceiling as well.
Let's bookmark these predictions: I think our #1 pick is a clear front line starter, and, if I may dream a bit, potentially the 2nd coming of Chris Carpenter.
(Whose signed Cy Young ball, not coincidentally, I am looking at on my desk next to my Satchel ball).

Great Draft!!!

Lot of Arms. High heat and K's incoming. Provided ithe talent can be developed and harnessed.

Put my money on Tampa/Boston Bloom in having a clue as to how to get it done.

I see this as a course correction adding so many college pitchers after a bad year in the lower minors for pitching.

I should've expanded here, sorry. I said in the GDT: Draft thread that this is probably my favorite draft since the 2021 McGreevy, Granillo, Graceffo, Love, Baker, Mills draft. I think we have a good chance of 4-6 pitchers making the MLB squad.

Duce- I'm sure if I aggregated your comments, I could come up with your 5 faves, but that's a lot of work. So, who were your 5 favorites? I'll take a stab, to see how good my comprehension skills are. Kade Anderson, Holiday, Willits, Arquette, Irish?

I expected Anderson to go #1 or #2, so I removed him from favs. I had Hernandez, Holliday, Willits, Irish and Arnold.

Which first rounders would have been a total draft fail had we picked them, in your opinion?

that's tough...on the spot, for me personally? I'm not an Arquette fan, not in the least. And I'm glad LaViolette had a bad season. Carlson, probably b/c he felt the most like a Kozma pick...will the hit tool succeed? Big gamble there. And I like Carlson a lot. Enjoyed watching him play. Just didn't want to draft him in the end.

so with the way the draft played out, your pick in that spot would have been... Hernandez?

not necessarily. He was my number 1 on my draft board followed by Willits and Holliday. For the Cards, it would've been a tough development. I tried to look at the draft as what I felt was best for the team. We can't afford to be the Pirates/Nats/White Sox....Perpetual rebuild. We lose our identity that way, and our identity is "The Fans". I would've been very happy with him, no doubt in my mind, but he would arrive 4-5 years down the road. And as a team, we're not on that timeline.

Willits, though was my first pick. I felt he could arrive in 3 years

Good thinking, and interesting. I also had my concerns about the timeline of a HS pitcher. I'm surprised though that you and the Nats both went Willits ahead of Holliday if picking a HS shortstop from OK. Willits dad went 800 ABs without a HR. Holliday's dad...didn't. He was also even younger than Ethan.

In some ways my disappointment will be losing out on Ike Irish. I just feel like he is someone that is going to do good things down the road.
