upcoming draft question

Post by musicman »

Can teams negotiate with players beforehand regarding money and college status? In other words, does a player have to go to the team that drafts them? My understanding is they can go back to school and try again the following year?

technically, you're not allowed to put a contract to ink...but prospects are allowed to give each team their bonus demands. And teams are allowed to declare their terms. From there they can negotiate, but not sign. They can come to terms...it happens all the time. I expect that Doyle has an agreed to contract with the Angels...probably has for a while....if you believe what all the pundits have been saying for a while.

And yes, a player can go back to school if their demands aren't met....Ryan Praguer (A&M) did last year, his high demands weren't met in the 3rd round....he's regretting that decision now.

Very few high draft picks opt not to sign. And even fewer end up with a better outcome.
