Then how did the Orioles get so much in return for this guy? I think this is a huge overpay by the Rays. A first round pick for a guy that's not even a closer. I mean this guy is a decent pitcher, but to give up a comp pick seems outrageous to me.
3 years of control on a pretty good reliever. And the Rays will likely move him before the 3 years are up. Do we possess any reliever with the same type of control? I don't think so.

I agree on the overpay, but the Phills are reportedly looking for relievers with years of control, too, so there's a competitive market for them. So, that's probably a driving factor in the overpay. Can that be a good thing for our two relievers with expiring control in Helsley and Maton? Maybe. Can't hurt the chances of moving Romero with 1 year of control left. Maybe our offer would be Romero plus a bat with control (Noot?) for a comp pick. Pozo might also look appealing. All of that said, unless Bloom is involved, none of that would happen. Mozeliak doesn’t have the desire/gumption to put something like that together.
