Montreal’s biggest move on the opening day of free agency wasn’t a signing but rather a trade as they sent Logan Mailloux to St. Louis for Zachary Bolduc. Our writers offer up their thoughts on the swap.

No doubt in my mind the Blues are gonna win this trade.

I hope you're right. Even more than the loss of skill with Bolduc is the loss of grit/ sandpaper / edge on a team who needs it.

And although he had a quiet playoff with additional experience he's the exact type of player you want come the post-season.

That said, it's good to see the team returning to their big defensemen era. And even if Mailloux takes time to grow into his defensive game, the team can get him up to speed over time along the lines of what Niko Mikkola was here defensively and where he is now. If Mailloux does I would consider us the winners too, but losing Bolduc stings on multiple levels.

I was disappointed in losing Bolduc and adding to that is reading reports that Mailloux isn’t good in his own end. After giving it some thought if you told me we were adding a RD that’s 6.3 215 that has PP potential, plays with an edge and is going to be in 2 all star games his first two seasons in the AHL after only playing 75 OHL games over 3 years I’d think we’d be crazy to not take a chance on him.

There have been a lot of posts over the past couple of seasons about the lack of size and snarl on the Blues defense. Without "the incident" this young man would have been a top-half of 1st round draft pick.

Well just have to see how it turns out. I hated the trade at first but I’m coming around to it a bit. Will just have to see how Mailloux plays and develops. If he cleans up his defensive game, he’s going to be a home run add. If he doesn’t, he might just become the fans’ next whipping boy. TBD.

But personally, I plan on giving him a good amount of grace. We really need him to hit. And bc of Covid, a suspension due to his bad decision at 17 and some injuries, he’s missed a lot of development time. Sometimes that simply dooms a kid and they can never get back that lost time. Other times, they just take a bit longer. I’m hoping for the later.

Will be rooting for Mailloux to make some big strides this season.

Bolduc is already replaced this year. Doesn’t mean they win a trade. It will be cool to watch their development. Bolduc really surprised me. His shot, poise and physicality (annoying top players) surprised me.

In his recent interview, he said the past season in the AHL he was working on his overall game. I thought someone posted someone from Montreal reporting that he focused on defense this past season.

In a sense, they've already replaced Bolduc with Snuggerud who's only played a small number of games with the Blues and that was with Holloway out. I am a big fan of Bolduc, but Dvorsky, Stenberg, Stancl and others will lessen the blow of losing him. There are only so many forward spots on the team.

The LAST thing the Blues needed was ANOTHER defenseman who is a liability in his own zone. They needed another Tyler Tucker. Instead, they got another Tanya Tucker. Apparently, they’re looking to add another in Bynum. Army apparently slept through the Final where Florida brutalized the Oilers’ defense or even the 2019 Final where the Blues BROKE the Sharks.
