Brent Burns Signs With Avalanche
Brent Burns signed a one-year contract with the Colorado Avalanche as he gears up for a 22nd career NHL season.
The team announced the 40-year-old defenseman's signing on Wednesday evening but didn't reveal an average annual value. Sportsnet's Elliotte Friedman reports the contract has a $1-million base salary with the potential to earn another $3 million in games-played bonuses. Burns was a UFA after finishing an eight-year contract with an $8-million cap hit.
This past season with the Carolina Hurricanes, Burns recorded six goals and 23 assists for 29 points in 82 games. He can extend the fourth-longest ironman streak in NHL history, which stands at 925 straight games.

Ouch. I hate to say this but he's likely to help them.

Not convinced he's an upgrade on Girard or Manson at this point in his career.
Probably upgrades their 3rd pairing, but he's pretty washed out at this point. Minor upgrade on EJ, but I doubt he's any kind of difference maker.

Just another reason to dislike the Avs

Re: Brent Burns Signs With Avalanche
^This. Did 40 y/o Suter help us? Some, sure. Was he a difference maker, esp late and in the playoffs? Nope

He was still playing top-4 minutes for Carolina. As long as the Avs use him as a 3rd pairing guy, I think he can add some value.Sophisticated Shoes wrote: ↑03 Jul 2025 12:55 pmHe didn't put Carolina over the top, but I don't think you're wrong.
He’s pretty much done but I like this move for the Avs. But for the Blues’ sake, I hope Burns hits all of his bonuses and it ends up costing the Avs on their 2026-27 cap.

He would have been a massive upgrade over Leddy...I'd have signed him and forgone the Mailloux/Bolduc trade and still waived Leddy. The guy is healthy, plays ALOT of minutes, and can still put up offense, AND he has size.

For next season alone, I would agree Burns + Bolduc would be better than Mailloux but the Mailloux for Bolduc trade was a longterm play. Burns is 40 and Mailloux is 22.smilinjoefission wrote: ↑03 Jul 2025 14:07 pm He would have been a massive upgrade over Leddy...I'd have signed him and forgone the Mailloux/Bolduc trade and still waived Leddy. Burns had 0 PP goals and only 3 PP assists last year.
He scored 4 PP goals in each of the 3 previous years and also had double digit PP assists in those 3 years.
So yes, his play & production fell off a cliff in 24-25.

But, he likely chose Denver and would have chosen Denver over us. He is looking for a cup. He went to the place where he thought he had the best chance to win one. This likely was never an option.smilinjoefission wrote: ↑03 Jul 2025 14:07 pm He would have been a massive upgrade over Leddy...I'd have signed him and forgone the Mailloux/Bolduc trade and still waived Leddy. And it will fall again.
He's done as anything near threatening imo.

Avs fans have to be questioning this move.
Re: Brent Burns Signs With Avalanche
This. Getting him, Suter, and still having Bolduc would have made this team much better than we stand today.smilinjoefission wrote: ↑03 Jul 2025 14:07 pm He would have been a massive upgrade over Leddy...I'd have signed him and forgone the Mailloux/Bolduc trade and still waived Leddy. Our defense had to get younger and right defenseman are horded like gold in the NHL.
How were you going to sign Bolduc, Holloway and Broberg next year? Where is that money coming from?
I love Bolduc as a player….but you have to give to get when it comes to trades.
How would you have gotten a RD with upside?
BTW, I believe Suter was a fantastic signing. Fits our window perfectly, and if he ends up becoming even better, he will be a free agent when Schenn’s deal expires.
