RHD vs. LHD

Post by stlblues1979 »

In football a left offensive tackle is considered a more important & valuable position than a right one because most QB's are right handed, so they protect the QB's blind side.

In hockey what is the reason that right handed defensemen seem more valuable than the left side?

I think mostly just because RHD are much harder to come by

Isn't it just because there are fewer right-hand shot players in general?

Its because right handed people(Canada) play hockey what people would call "left handed" so a right handed shot is like a lefty(not as common)

Like 1/10th as common, so if they play strong hand on top then they would be at a high premium. As as dumb American with no hockey background in the family, I played right handed as a righty and it feels so weird to swap it up.

I dunno
I'm right handed and shooting righty feels natural to me. Sort of like swinging a baseball bat as a righty. Left handed would be weird for me, but I guess its whatever you're taught when you're young.

I'd say the ratio is a little less because some righties do play strong hand on bottom. I'm always strong hand on bottom even with sports/games where that is considered left handed. Boxing both left and right handed feel natural.

The ratio is definitely not crazy for sure because of the reason you mention. It never seemed to hinder me when I was playing, and to be honest it felt like it was normal when I was a kid. Most kids were right handed, shooting right that I recall in the STL area.
