Takeaways/Giveaways

Post by theograce »

I’d really like an explanation from the nhl or somebody in the know.

What happened this year?

I can’t find any elite players in the positive

Thomas went from 70/54 to 22/99 in one year? This is seen for everyone.

Makes you wonder about Blocked shots, hits etc, but I’ve never seen anything like this for a statistical category.

I noticed this exact same thing. After Barkov won the Selke, I looked at his stats and noticed how "poor" he was in takeaway/giveaways and was about to make a conclusion that he won the award based on nothing but reputation.

Then, I looked at Reinhart, Cirelli and Eichel. Exact same disparity happened to them too. The stats have literally been flipped on its head and gone extreme in the exact opposite direction.

Unfortunately, I can offer no explanation or theory.

In a business where subjective recording of statistics is worth millions and millions millions … I’m just curious. Can’t believe this hasn’t been talked about. I’ve never seen anything like it in any category

Useless stat for the most part. The best players have the puck more often and turn it over more often. I don’t even pay attention to that stat. It’s as useless as +/-

But it speaks to stat collection in general.

Both of those stats can be useful imo, but I’m looking at the bigger issue, as many are subject to interpretation, bias etc. it’s the Wild West it seems

The way it's handled rink to rink it is far worse reflective of anything true compared to plus/minus.

I do think plus minus has merit to some level of decent.

Yeah. You can scan the Blues stats and tell at a glance they were a tough team at even strength. All stats need context.

Subjective calls. I'm not sure what guidance the NHL gives to the various teams.
A good number of NHL players have had comments about their team's Official Scorers for years. They don't necessarily speak of it angrily nor often, but there is the occasional remark.
