Nolan Gorman (TB)

Post by Talkin' Baseball »

Regardless of how things turn out with Nolan Arenado, I would trade Nolan Gorman. It could be done at the deadline, if a deal can be struck, or in the offseason. I’m not a Gorman-hater. I suspect he will have some good seasons. The biggest problem is the Cardinals’ clunky roster. There are too many infielders and not enough right-handed bats- especially in the outfield. As we have seen this season, if Arenado is not moved the infield gets crowded- and that’s even before Wetherholt shows up and Saggese gets promoted.

Trade Nolan Gorman to the Athletics for Colby Thomas and Kade Morris. Thomas is a 24-year-old corner outfielder in AAA. He is the #2 prospect in the Athletics system. He has good power and so far, is hitting .300 with 17 HR and an OPS of .917 at Las Vegas this season. He still has all his service time intact. He seems ready for a call-up. Morris is also at AAA. As a 23 year old RHP, he is their #14 prospect with a fastball that sits at 95-96. He is the Athletics #14 prospect.
The Athletics are going to be good sooner than later. They already have a full outfield and need a third baseman. They actually have an excellent, young infield- except for 3B. They have similar power potential and similar propensities to strike out. This trade balances out both rosters. There are other teams that would want Gorman if this doesn’t pan out, but the fit seems too good to ignore.

Comment on the above, rank the below, or make your own suggestions.
1) Gorman to the Athletics for Colby Thomas and Kade Morris.
2) Gorman to Seattle for Ryan Sloan, Michael Morales, and Brandyn Garcia.
3) Gorman to the Tigers for Josue Bricneo.
4) Gorman to Kansas City for Noah Cameron plus _______.

I don't subscribe to Baseball Trade Values. But, I have seen proposals on the trade boards where Gorman is valued at $12M. The A's #2 prospect has to be valued at more than that. He is also a strike out machine and no sure thing. Similarly, the 3 top 15 pitching prospects from Seattle have to be worth more than $12M. I am happy to make either of the first 2 trades and doubt any of those teams have any interest. Seattle has a young 3B who doesn't have a lot of power, but is a much better defender than Gorman and puts the ball in play. Oakland is many years away from contending. So, why trade 2 top 15 prospects including a #2 for a guy that is failing? I agree the A's need a 3B. I would want the Mason Miller or Justin Sterner, who are both young relievers with years of control. They might do that.

The current valuation for Gorman is 13.9, Thomas is an even 10. On the Seattle trade the pitchers are their #9, #14, and #15 prospects valued at 9.9, 2.1, and 2.1 respectively.
