We may be stuck with Nolan Arenado. His diminishing bat has probably killed any trade value that might have existed. If there is a way to move him- he should be moved.
It’s not possible to talk about trading him without talking about the money. The Cardinals owe deferred money of 6M this year and again next year. The Rockies are paying 5M this year and again next year. At the deadline he will be owed approximately 7M more this season. I propose the Cardinals pick up the 12M in deferred money, all the remaining 7M of this years salary, and 1M of next years salary. So, the Cardinals pick up 20M and the receiving team picks up 15M of salary next year and 15M of salary the year after that.
I suggested in the Ryan Helsley trade thread that the Cardinals try to ship him to the Dodgers with cash for Bobby Miller- and I think they should try. I don’t think the Dodgers will do this.
Another team that I think was on his approved list to be traded to is the Angels. The Angels at the time of this post are only 2.5 games out of a wildcard. They have some decent position players. They pay Anthony Rendon 34M to not play 3b, maybe they would pay Arenado 15M to actually show up and play. I mostly want them to take him and the 31M owed the next two years, so I don’t want to get too greedy with the ask. So how about this- Angels #21 prospect Camden Minacci. He is a 6’3” 215 lb relief pitcher at AA. Currently 23, he grades 60/80 with his fastball and 60/80 with a slider. His fastball currently sits in the mid-90’s and peaks at 98-99 according to his scouting report.
A third team on his trade list that you could make a case for is the New York Mets. They have the financial ability and the will to make a move of this significance. For most of the first half, they have also had a need. If they would take Nolan and 20M, I would be good taking back someone from the teens of their top 30 prospects list, perhaps #18 RHP Nate Dohm.
Two other teams I could see being interested, but not on his list, are the Detroit Tigers and the Seattle Mariners. Maybe he would expand his list, and maybe not. If he stays, it may be that his role needs to diminish. The Cardinals aren’t good about doing that with their veteran players.
Maybe something gets done- be prepared to keep Nolan. I’m not sure anyone is going to take him on, and I’m not even sure the Cardinals would be willing to kick in the 20M if there was a taker.

1) Ryan Helsley, Nolan Arenado, and 20M to the Dodgers for Jackson Ferris and Bobby Miller.
2) Nolan Arenado and 20 M to the Angels for Camden Minacci.
3) Nolan Arenado to the Mets for Nate Dohm (or comparable)
