Edmonton Post Season Interview McDavid "With that being said"

Post by callitwhatyouwant »

McDavid has a clip up from his end of the year presser today that says, "with that being said ultimately, I still need to do what's best for me and my family and that's who I have to take care of first, but of course there's unfinished business here."

The quote is loaded. The question that was asked was how Draisaitl didn't have to say his intention of resigning after last year but he did and what goes into this july 1 and do you feel like there's unfinished business. McDavid talks about the behind the scenes talks with the players and the ups and downs and frustrations etc.. The quote is the first documented shot across the bow that hints towards the possibility of him entertaining leaving.

This appears to be a leverage move to Edmonton's management to get your ish together. But where there is smoke there is always fire. This is similar to Petro's situation when he was on the last year of his deal. He started talking about playing in front of his family in Toronto and things like that, and it soured relationships. I have made multiple posts about how the worst situation that could happen to the Oilers is for McDavid to walk after the years over and they get no cup and no assets. The 2nd worst thing is having to trade him. But they are going to be confronted with that question July 1. Do we try and put a square peg into a round hole and fill in the gaps with the terrible contracts they have and does that satisfy McJesus? Or do they strike while the market is at its biggest and create a demand and get as much assets back to try and win now with a different lineup around Draisaitl.

Interesting developments on 6-19

It’s crazy to think what McDavid would bring back in a trade.
Of course 1 year without any guarantee that he will resign would be a lot different than a guarantee/sign trade. Look no further than the Rantanen situation for the risk of giving up a lot for the hope a top tier player will want to resign.

If only we still had Roman Vopat. We could have built an offer around him!

I think they would have to add Blais to that package to make it enticing.

"Take care of my family...what's best for me and my family..." Gosh, they must have some expensive tastes. Make sure that Agent is taken care of too.

What is the going rate for agents these days... 10%, 15% more?

Good call. It was getting a little lopsided. Don't want to get ripped off.

Yeah, that reads like "It will cost a pretty penny to keep me in Edmonton".

The Oilers actually could use Sammy Blais of 2019...an aggressive forechecker reckless player.

2019 being the key factor. And since they need a goalie, maybe we can get Panger to come out of retirement and throw him in too.

He has a NMC already so if they trade him he can pick the destination and he very much would be the chooser.

So much to unpack here, but foremost Edmonton and McDavid may have likely just closed the window together and individually for a cup.

If this is McDavids stance, there isn’t another team in the league that can afford what McDavid is going to ask for and support a competitive team around him. That Edmonton group was about as close as anyone was ever going to get with his cap hit.

Likewise there isn’t going to be a team in the league with cup aspirations that is going to trade the package required to get him and then pay him his number.

It’s never been more obvious that cups are won now with extreme depth.

The destinations willing to commit the % of cap to him alone are the teams looking to build a fanbase vs. win a cup.

Just look across the ice at Florida where you’re likely going to see heroes like Bennett, Marchand and ekblad take pay cuts to stay with a team and win more cups.

The only other thing I would have liked to have seen in your write up is the added pressure on the franchise in dealing with this for having lost "The Great One" some 37 years ago.

How can the same franchise do this twice?

Speaking of doing it twice, Eklund is now pushing a rumor that McDavid may be traded to……LA. It’s Ek, so take that with a bag of salt.

Oilers won a cup without Gretzky

Gretzky won zero Cups without the Oilers.
