Best Films 2015-current
I'm a fan of the Sight & Sound top 100 concept, the most recent of which came out in 2022.
I have only seen some of the great films I know must have been made in the 2015-current period and I know I've missed out on some. It's kind of random too, for example I have seen Once Upon A Time in Hollywood but not Moonlight. So I am aware there are absolute must sees in my missing list, and I thought I'd create a thread for people to list/rank their gems of the last decade so that I can fill in what I haven't seen.
To get a grounding of the type of quality I am trying to capture, here are 21 films I would consider candidates for the very top of my list, in relative order. I am looking for films that are truly timeless and great of the past decade. I know I have missed some.
2001
Au hasard Balthazar
The Godfather
The Third Man
The Rules of the Game
The Battle of Algiers
Bicycle Thieves
Apocalypse Now
Sansho the Baliff
Chinatown
Godfather II
Casablanca
Paths of Glory
Lawrence of Arabia
Seven Samurai
Dr. Strangelove
Taxi Driver
Sunset Boulevard
Once Upon a Time in the West
The Conversation
The Fog of War
What must I see from the last decade ...

Appreciate the responses so far! I put everything in a spreadsheet. Keep em coming
I've seen some of these but there's an abundance of riches in here for me, thank you.
(I have lived with someone for 10 years where you morph into watching shows as opposed to speculative new movies. Even if you mean to go back and see them, you get busy and the misses pile up.)

I'm going to give you the perspective of a dummy who likes to be entertained. I always enjoy the recs of Dicktar and 3Dender. Think of them as the versions of you and STLMN in Blues talk when it comes to prospects. Their knowledge of films = your knowledge of NHL prospects and I would listen to them all day long.
I love their recs and agree with them 90% of the time. I so enjoy a movie that has a great story, is beautifully acted, filmed in a great location, lit well, written and directed well that makes me think. I also very much enjoy things blowing up, and titties and mindless entertainment. My recs aren't going to satisfy 3 seconds of intellectual curiosity, but you should enjoy at least some of these on those evenings when you aren't in a mood to have to put the thinking cap on. These are "I've had a long day, and I just want to turn on (fill in streaming service blank) and watch something. Going on memory from 2015 on. There is a chance a few of these pre-2015:
The Martian
Mollys Game (You might now notice that I might be in love with Jesssica Chastain as the first two are hers, and there are not enough poker movies)
The Revenant
Once Upon a Time in Hollywood (sucker for QT films)
The Accountant
Any John Wick film made after 2015-especially 1,2,3
Bohemian Rhapsody
Black Panther
1917
Dunkirk
BlackKKlansman
Oppenheimer
Fletch with Jon Hamm (joking)
Ok boys, tear me apart.

It's great, I really didn't expect to get this quality of reply so quickly from folks, so I appreciate it. I can just see the end of the "we have now watched every season of Top Chef" runway and hockey season is over.George Zipp wrote: ↑19 Jun 2025 08:42 am I'm going to give you the perspective of a dummy who likes to be entertained. I am more familiar with Molly's Game subject matter than most, I was adjacent to/in that professional poker playing world in LA and knew all about Tobey Maguire before building up a political blog with Nate. Tobey is a strong poker player but has other issues ...
Jon Hamm, my almost Burroughs classmate, was in No Sudden Move (notice the Chinatown esque theme that plays with his character on screen), so that and how good a player Bob Bassen was would be the first things I'd talk to him about. No Sudden Move is a love letter to noir and makes my top 100 in the 90s. The Card Counter makes it in the 80s, but those are the only two I have on the top 100 list from 2015-current. This could stand some rethinking – I will claim knowledge of film noir on par with knowledge of hockey prospects, I could talk about noir films forever. But its weakest place is the recent decade.
(tip: I will say The Rover (2014) is incredible. I have it there with The French Connection and Blade Runner in the 70-72 range, and Inherent Vice (2014) comes in at #67)

Thanks for the kind words George.
Also to OP I'm a big fan of The Rover, didn't include it bc it just misses the chronological cut. But it's one of the movies I recommend to people when they scoff at me saying Pattinson has not only the best acting but probably the most compelling role selection of his generation.
To that effect Pattinson fans or even the Pattinson-curious should also watch Good Times (for me more enjoyable than the higher profile Uncut Gems), High Life and The Lighthouse.

Re: Best Films 2015-current
Yeah I was in a period of densely watching movies a couple years ago and The Rover and its perfect bleakness just stayed with me through the mass of films, usually a sign of quality. There is a look exchanged between two characters in it that more captures the unspeakability of the entire human damage than I have ever seen. And Pattinson is excellent, as is neo noir treasure Guy Pearce (Memento, LA Confidential).3dender wrote: ↑19 Jun 2025 13:08 pm+1 on The Handmaiden and Blade Runner.todd-parker wrote: ↑19 Jun 2025 11:41 am Shoplifters

That's the second quality recommendation for Good Times (about a year apart).
Of mentioned so far, these are ones I've seen:
Everything Everywhere All at Once (she insisted we watch it and it was great)
Parasite (phenomenal)
Get Out (so good)
I, Tonya (vv good)
Uncut Gems (considered it for my noir list with spaced watches)
Dune 1 (read the book and like the Lynch version too, haven't made time to see #2)
Once Upon a Time in Hollywood (Brad Pitt is 55 – 55!! – in that scene where he's shirtless on the roof fixing Leo's antenna and I am almost finished rising to that specific challenge, now he's filming the sequel at 61 ... )
BlacKKKlansman (I can't remember my reaction)
Knives Out (great)
The Martian (liked it. [shirt] potatoes)
Mollys Game (I can't get my partner to watch it)
Black Panther
That means the rest are all available, something like 30+ I wonder where I should start.
I liked First Reformed (ending I am not sure about) and Da 5 Bloods (strong 1st hit, need to see it again)

I used to play a ton of poker. Especially online before Black Friday in 2011. I’ll still play quite a bit and I’m pretty sure that next year I’m going to finally bite the bullet and play the WSOP main event. Im going to have to figure out how to gain enough patience not to donk off a 10k buy in. I have a year. I’ll work it out. I’ve also played a ton at commerce Hollywood Park and hustler in LA. I really like all of those rooms.seattleblue wrote: ↑19 Jun 2025 12:22 pmIt's great, I really didn't expect to get this quality of reply so quickly from folks, so I appreciate it. Im very familiar with the game from the movie as well. Im sure you are aware of the rumors of just how much money Tobey took out of that game. I’d love to know the truth.

Oh man back in early 2008 from like March thru mid July I lived in the Crowne Plaza 8th floor adjacent to Commerce. I was being backed at that time. Though ironically played mostly at the Bike as opposed to downstairs. I would get a torta at the vendor by the 5-10 room and then go upstairs at like 3am and watch the 6am weekday political shows and decompress from the session. Sometimes I would write, that is where I was living when the whole 538 thing started. It was organic I was just writing on the same topics so we teamed up and did a blog.George Zipp wrote: ↑19 Jun 2025 17:25 pmI used to play a ton of poker. Hustler was always wild action or bad games but when I was first getting underway 2001-2003 I would play huge long sessions there and especially the easy Hollywood Park low stakes games (this was back in my 3-6 limit holdem days). I turned a two law firm recruiting visit into a ten day poker spree during which I won a live tournament at Hustler. But I also used to criss cross the country driving and go into rooms in random places kind of like protagonist does in The Card Counter. Schrader definitely has spent long hours at the table. It has been way too long since I played seriously though.

Re: Best Films 2015-current
Since 2011 as you likely know it's next to impossible to play online in the US. I believe currently you can play in NV, PA, MI and there might be one other State. It's all so stupid. When Black Friday first hit in April of 2011 for the first two years or so I went to Toronto to play the online series on Stars. There are 2 of them annually. It got to be too much, and I stopped. Now I will go to Vegas every three or four years and play a couple of WSOP events and some cash while I'm there and from time to time I'll go to Hollywood in Maryland Heights. They actually run a really good tournament once a month that people travel to. It's usually the last Saturday of the month. I play it 2-3 times a year. And I went to MI for business last december and have a few hundred bucks sitting on PokerStars that I can't get to until I go back to MI. Left that job in Feb.seattleblue wrote: ↑19 Jun 2025 19:48 pmOh man back in early 2008 from like March thru mid July I lived in the Crowne Plaza 8th floor adjacent to Commerce. (tip: I will say The Rover (2014) is incredible. I have it there with The French Connection and Blade Runner in the 70-72 range, and Inherent Vice (2014) comes in at #67)
Im very familiar with the game from the movie as well. Im sure you are aware of the rumors of just how much money Tobey took out of that game. I’d love to know the truth.

Yesterday I had the day off so for grins I went and played the day tourney at Hollywood. The day tourneys stink bc the structures stink. I was card dead all day and never got going even tho I dragged my stack out for three hours. Right before I got knocked out this 80 yr old guy gets moved to my table. The man literally had no teeth. He also had heaps of chips. Guy at the other end of the table three bets old mans opener. Old man hems and haws and then open folds KK face up. I almost threw up in my mouth. I had been looking at 3-7, 2-9, J-4 for hours and this chud folds KK pre with the table chip lead. OK,done now hijacking your thread. When the heat kicks in this weekend I might start a poker movie or poker tangent movie thread.
