3 Blues dream trades that probably won't happen but would be game-changers

Two traits stand out to me with the St. Louis Blues: They’re young, and they’re good. That means, when we talk about making a dream, blockbuster trade or two, I’m not talking about mortgaging present or future assets to land a big-name player.

The Blues don’t need them, even if they’d be nice to have. Instead, you can ask yourself what’s necessary for the Blues to reach a greater level than what they were at when they took the Winnipeg Jets to the brink back in May.


Bringing in young players to complete this core and players who have, at varying levels, proven that they can contribute in the NHL. Below, you won’t find a list of ‘dream trades’ in a traditional sense, since there’s only one blockbuster name on the list. But all three of these players, ironically pending restricted free agents, would play important roles for the Blues.

I hadn't considered the latter two, and I don't think they would be dream trades or game-changers for this team. Maybe Byram who did play 82 games last season. I didn't realize he was 6'1 200lbs, thought he was smaller. I keep reading he's a solid two-way defender but always thought of him as an offensive guy. Does he run the PP?

When I hear those terms, I think not of smaller defensemen and wingers, but of players like Noah Dobson and Dawson Mercer. Tkachuk. Pastrnak. Power.

A 23yr old Dman positioned to be a stud...what's that gonna cost the Blues? Nothing if the offer sheet him, but Sabres would be stupid not to match.

Patience. Wait to see what else may become available once teams are, or want to be cash-strapped to land their other next big fish. A lot of remaining homework to prioritize whom could be realistic...and jump fast as soon as the parts start moving to fill the 2C or another 3C and/or solid RHD. Don't panic, don't compromise, stick to plan.
