The Situation

Bottom 10th, down 5-4, fastest runner on 2B, 0 outs, 1,2,3 batters due up......

Are you managing in this situation to ensure you tie at the very least? Or, are you managing to win with no regard to at least tying?

I am ensuring the tie and then going for the win.

How about I’m managing to win, but my first priority is the tieing run.

So if I bunt it looks as if I’m playing the run, but I gotta tie before I can win. So I bunt minimum.

Why bunt. Only three real outcomes can stop me from moving that runner- K, come backer, pop out.

To assure moving the runner you bunt.

How do you ensure you tie ? Have watched many games where home team hasn’t scored .
Personally, I would have bunted with Noot. Still no certainty he is going to score with 1 out.

You have to tie before you can win? Uhh, no you don't.

That aside, even a successful bunt does not ensure you tie.

Nothing is 100%. Hopefully, we all know that. But VSII on 3B with 1 out and Winn, Donny due is pretty close to it. Winn's groundball to 2B scores VSII.

Obviously, the word "ensure" has some of you guys all twisted up. Sorry.

For the record, I understand that nothing is 100%.

Sure you do. Even on a homerun, the tieing run scores before the lead or tieing run.
No a bunt doesn’t assure a run, but with Scott on third and top of order, that’s close.

If a team/manager can’t get a runner from 2nd home with best hitters on team due up something is wrong
Groundball/bunt to 3rd and ANY combination of hit, fly,……gets it done

If a game is tied, and a team hits a 2 run walkoff HR do they only count the run that wins? They do not.

No, it's not close to ensured, this is baseball, after all.

It's disappointing and frustrating but how is it wrong? StL isn't the first home team which lost by a run because they couldn't get the Manfred Man around.

Baseball is hard and the other team is trying to win too.

It is a fundamental.

How do you fix fundamentals? Whose job is it to fix fundamentals?

No it’s more than fundamental. It’s strategic. By now teams should have a very well layer out plan for extras.

The issue is the K from Nootbaar. The one thing that he can’t do in that situation is strike out. With Scott on second, Nootbaar has to put the ball in play. So many things would have allowed Scott to get to 3B with one out but striking out just can’t happen.
