Future of pitching - Matthews, Hence, Thompson, Robberse, now Libby hurt

Also Pallante regressing sharply of late. Is he worn down or just not good?

What does this mean for the youth movement if we can't develop 1 (let alone 5) consistent 33 game starters from our system? Is it the draft picks or the program? They just don't seem durable enough.

Roby, if he can maintain his pitching health and durability. He has tremendous pitching talent.

He was hurt a lot last year (or was it the year before or both?). But seems good at the moment. Was last year a one-off or does he have durability issues too?

So far, so good this season. He pitched a very good game, 6 2/3 innings in his last start. He goes again tomorrow evening.

Great. I still don't think we will ever develop 5 healthy starters from our rotation at the same time. Free agency and trade acquisitions will have to continue to be part of the puzzle.

Ixan Henderson at AA is starting to get some attention.

Drew Rom was another one we discussed a lot here after his trade in 2023. Also hurt. There are just so many hurdles for a pitching prospect to make it to the big leagues and find long term success. Maybe something to consider when picking a pitcher or a slugger with our #5 pick this month.

while true...you've left out McGreevy who has been a work horse in the minors. Henderson and Rajcic have been workhorses the last 2 years.

Matthews wasn't so much an injury as it was discomfort caused by pitching mechanics gone awry. He fixed that easily enough.

and FYI to your question on Roby...he missed better part of the last 2 seasons. Seems healthy now. But I imagine his innings to be limited around 75-100 this season.

Is Matthews pitching again? The official websites injuries and transactions list still shows him as TBD return with the last update from April. Not sure if that’s accurate or just gross neglect?

Libby may not be hurt, but how many innings were we expecting him to throw before wearing down after pitching 60 and 80 the last two years?

I think Pallante still has a lot to work on. I don't see him as a top of rotation guy yet. The ones with the best shot of being our best arm I think are Liberatore or Mathews. Hence has too many injuries. You couldn't go wrong drafting an SP arm if you could get a college arm close to big leagues, I'm not well versed on the choices of players we might get to pick at #5.
