Would love to see some posters behind home plate calling 99-100 mph pitches . Call 30 of them and see how many are correct ?

Put them at 1st too and see how many bang bang plays at 1st they get right ?
Ever notice that if all the close ones where manager holds up his hand for the team video Guys to check. That a vast majority of them are waived off (no replay) asked.
Umps do a very good job !

The biggest issue is ball strike call. With the review process most of the other issues are gone.

The process to review balls strikes they used in spring training worked. They need to install that in regular season play.

Very good points!
The majority of them are ok and calling balls/strikes on pitches moving at that speed is tough.
With that in mind....for the betterment of the
game....I think using electronics would be a wiser choice.

Remember umpires just don't interview for these jobs . They have spent considerable time in the minors and get graded on how well they do .. The best ones get promote to the major leagues. Only the best of the best are selected for MLB. Yes, they all make mistakes now and then but ask managers in MLB , they are very complimentary of the job umpires do . Plus the umps know their rule book backwards and forwards .. when odd plays come up , they know what the rules are that apply . Often the announcers , players, and certainly fans have no clue why a certain call was made .
How many times after an odd play and ruling the home fans don't like do you read on CT, they need to change that rule ! LOL EX. Like the catch by Arenado tumbling out of play into the seats and both runners were awarded a one base advancement. Fans think they know the rules of the game but in actuality the umpires are the ones that truly understand them and they don't need to take out the rule book when making a call. They are professionasl at their craft.

Disagree.
Their union protects them from any ramifications and data shows their effectiveness wanes like players as they age. Yet they stay around forever.

bingo, the worst umpires are not relegated to aaa and the top aaa umps promoted to MLB. That is the problem, tenure for duds. Year after year after year some umps appeared every year on the 5 worst umpires list, yet...nothing done.

I wonder if the umpires had no union what would have happened to a good umpire named Don Deckinger who blew the Game 6 World Series by a missed call at 1st base ( no replay back then ). After the fact seeing he missed that would the public outcry of his missed call had the MLB fire him over that missed call. Sure hope not !

IMO we absolutely should go with the automated strike zone on every single pitch. No shaming of the umpires intended. Just fine tune it and use it. Home plate ump should wear an earpiece and call the pitches. The delay would be negligible. Maybe half a second at most. Hell, some umps do that anyway. And don't settle for that proposed "challenge system" [nonsense]. You can get the strike zone standardized and get the calls right. Just do it. It's too important not to do it.

You guys have no clue how unions work. All a union can do is make sure the rules are followed and make sure the workers right are protected. They cannot keep someone from being fired if the company, league, or organization have their ducks in a row.

Totally agree with this. The ump is calling the game, but, if he misses a call, he is notified and the call is fixed. Since all pitchers really take at least 10-12 seconds minimum between pitches (most more), even changing the call within 3 seconds is OK, not one half. The umps are generally decent. But, there are several that lose their cool when they are having a bad day and it wrecks games. Given the technology, there is no need for that.
