This deadline should be buying and selling
you will never see the value, Sonny has right now. You could get a haul Several top contenders who desperately could use a #1/#2. Helsley, he can get some talent back, teams desperate for closers.
YOu can also buy. this one or the other is asinine, but we have Mo'ron, so being creative isn't in the cards.

Sonny has no-trade he wouldn’t waive before the season, doubt he would now. On a good team and close to home, probably pretty content.AtillaTheBlue1 wrote: ↑08 Jun 2025 13:12 pm you will never see the value, Sonny has right now. Buying and selling could still happen but probably lesser names.

To something non-commital and middling- that would be completely on brand. We could re-set and contend.CorneliusWolfe wrote: ↑08 Jun 2025 13:26 pmSonny has no-trade he wouldn’t waive before the season, doubt he would now. Gray isn't going anywhere, he made that clear just like WillyC.
Helsley definitely could go along w/Fedde and Matz of the Cardinals happen to slide.
I agree w/OP, they should look to be sellers (if they're out of it) and buyers if they can land a young piece for the future that C. Bloom wants.
I think Bloom will make these calls, not Mo.

This team is not a WS contender. They need to move pieces at the deadline and set up talent for the future. Winning 90 games and being the last team in the playoffs is fools gold. Arendo is in a rapid decline at the plate and they need help in a lot of areas. Continue with the reset.

No one thought the 83 win team of 2006 would go far either, or make playoffs at all.bretto12 wrote: ↑08 Jun 2025 14:00 pm This team is not a WS contender. Admittedly, trying to make playoffs as a fringe team and hope for the best has been status quo.
Most guys they’d like to move won’t waive NTC so not much they can do. Helsley and Fedde has some value but probably not much more than comp picks.
No team will give top ML ready prospects, just lottery tickets. Rather team pick their own if we’re going to have to wait years anyway. I think they add a little and Mo takes one last crack at it. Nothing long-term or disruptive to the plan though.
Re: This deadline should be buying and selling
The vets are going no where. They have NTCs. Why would they accept a trade to a team that we are better than?CorneliusWolfe wrote: ↑08 Jun 2025 13:26 pmSonny has no-trade he wouldn’t waive before the season, doubt he would now. But they 20 somethings - sure, trade value for value and try to get what we need to fill holes and get better.
Another RH power bat with OF glove would sure help.

Exactly this isn’t the NFL where you can change the entire course of franchise by trading one Herschel Walker.CorneliusWolfe wrote: ↑09 Jun 2025 09:12 amNo one thought the 83 win team of 2006 would go far either, or make playoffs at all.bretto12 wrote: ↑08 Jun 2025 14:00 pm This team is not a WS contender. MLB just doesn’t work like that. You pay for wins one way or another. Find a second year Arb guy or a 30-year-old with a long-term contract and a cheap owner and trade a B level prospect for them and just bite the bullet on Payroll. That’s how you get better.

Re: This deadline should be buying and selling
20 years ago, the Cardinals could've gotten a decent haul for Fedde but orgs have wised up. I was hoping his trade value would stabilize or even increase come July, but his peripherals are poor. K/9 is considerably down, BB/9 is considerably up and, with that, his WHIP is inflated. Maybe the stooges in Colorado don't look at anything beyond ERA and they send over...*checks notes*...never mind. They have nothing of value.
Re: This deadline should be buying and selling
They just took 2 of 3 from the Dodgers.bretto12 wrote: ↑08 Jun 2025 14:00 pm This team is not a WS contender. They need to move pieces at the deadline and set up talent for the future. They have won starts made by Yamamato, Zack Wheeler, Paul Skenes, Framber Valdez, Cole Ragans, MacKenzie Gore, etc.
You may believe they aren’t a WS contender, but they’ve played like they could.
Re: This deadline should be buying and selling
IF a team wants Fedde he will not be their #1 or #2. They see him as a needed piece to get there.VegasVinny wrote: ↑09 Jun 2025 09:26 am 20 years ago, the Cardinals could've gotten a decent haul for Fedde but orgs have wised up. Same with the majority of trades at the deadline for veteran players.
The team should always "buy" at the deadline. They're either buying for now or the future.

Agree. And with deals that we win, or at least make us better and not just cheaper.renostl wrote: ↑09 Jun 2025 10:14 amIF a team wants Fedde he will not be their #1 or #2. Too many posters, want to just sell for the sake of selling even if we get nothing back but the proverbial PTBNL, because they are scared of looming free agencies or have FOMO.
Maybe the highest value play is to keep Fedde for another four months and maybe he wins a start or two in the playoffs. Unless we are trading him for a witt or holiday level prospect (which is impossible), then playoff wins are the goal. We can’t keep trading the present for the future or the future will never arrive. At some point, you just have to go for it and hopefully keep going for it Eight years out of 10.
Re: This deadline should be buying and selling
I mostly agree on a player like Fedde I’m not sure the return is worth it. On a player like Helsley, I think the return might be worth it though. He’s more of an elite talent at his position and the value in the innings we would lose out on (like 20 regular season innings) versus the potential return of the prospect(s) you get for him, makes it worth considering at least.Carp4Cy wrote: ↑09 Jun 2025 10:45 amAgree. You are becoming an optimist. I'm hoping SP stays healthy. When Gray starts the Cards are 11-2 otherwise we are a .500 team.Futuregm2 wrote: ↑09 Jun 2025 09:33 amThey just took 2 of 3 from the Dodgers.bretto12 wrote: ↑08 Jun 2025 14:00 pm This team is not a WS contender. lol, I’ve always been an optimist. I had them winning 90 games and the NL Central by a game over the Cubs this year pre-season.thetank2 wrote: ↑09 Jun 2025 10:55 amYou are becoming an optimist.
