Sounds like he is in rough shape, but he is a fighter. Best of luck to him.

This is awful, especially for his family including three kids. Him and his brother run one of the best wrestling academies in the country, and he's been a great mentor for thousands of kids. Regarding Mizzou, he brought home two NCAA titles and has fed Mizzou recruiting for years with wrestlers from all over making them a consistent top 10 team in the country.

I hope he makes a full recovery soon.

Staph is relatively common in wrestling circles. The bacteria can infect a small cut or abrasion, and then it spreads due.to the close contact of matches and training. A skin infection can take weeks to clear. Unfortunately the pathogen occasionally infects the respiratory system and can result in a nasty illness. Worst case scenario, the bug is identified as MRSA:
Methicillin-
Resistant
Staphylococcus
Aureus
The highly drug resistant strain of staph, likely evolved due to excessive use of anti-biotics in the American healthcare system (editorial). If he has MRSA pneumonia he has a long road ahead. He's probably in very good physical condition, so that's a plus. Wishing him strength and good fortune.

Ben still hasn't improved very much. It seems he will definitely need a lung transplant. This is just tragic. Beyond his NCAA wrestling and MMA accomplishments, he runs a large youth program with his brother in Wisconsin. His youth program focuses on making the kids better wrestlers and not traveling across the country competing in high level tournaments at a young age. His wrestlers (like Keegan OToole) are known for peaking later . Quite a few mizzou wrestlers are from his club. More importantly he has a wife and three young kids and is only 40.

The whole wrestling community is pulling for him. Among other, Dana White has set up a fund for his health expenses which will be in the millions.

Thanks for the update. I have not seen anything official so appreciate the news even though it sounds like a tough road back.

Godspeed to Ben. A remlnder that no matter how advanced our medical science is, we're still prey to the smallest microbes on the planet. If you're getting on in years, ask your doctor about Prevnar 20, a vaccine that provides protection against 20 different strains of bacteria known to cause pneumonia in humans. Although it doesn't protect against MRSA staph, which is what I believe affects Asken.
