Women’s sports bar coming to STL soon

Post by Uncle John »

ST. LOUIS – A new sports bar—dedicated to supporting women’s sports—will be opening its doors in St. Louis soon.

The Sports Bra, which is expanding its locations across the country, initially opened in Portland, Oregon, in 2022.

Its founder and CEO, Jenny Nguyen, says the bar’s mission is to foster more visibility for women’s sports.

“Each new location will carry the same heart and mission as our original one in Portland—uplifting women-owned businesses, serving delicious food and creating a welcoming space for everyone who wants to belong to a community and be part of the movement,” Nguyen said in a blog post.

Although watching and supporting women’s sports is the primary focus, the bar has a unique food and drink catalog.

At the Sports Bra, locals can enjoy signature cocktails, beers and cider that were crafted by Freeland Spirits, a women-owned distillery.

The bar’s food options also cater to those who are vegan, vegetarian, gluten-free or dairy-free.

The Sports Bra will also expand to cities like Boston, Indianapolis (home to Caitlin Clark and the Indiana Fever) and Las Vegas.

With women’s sports rising in popularity, St. Louisans will now have an opportunity to tune into the WNBA and support the growth of the game.

For all those who still dearly miss the groundbreaking Mor or Les on S. Grand, which had its own 9/11 disaster...46 years ago: https://tinyurl.com/2hbsmcv4

I wonder where they'll locate (CWE?). I dearly hope they survive and thrive in St. Louis, but they'll soon discover this ain't Portland, babe.

Genesis I or was it II, in the early 80's was about the only place to listen to New Wave in Saint Louis. The only drawback was having to pay a $2 cover for being a man after following some girls who just walked in. The first lesbian club I ever encountered as a twentysomething. Still remember Flock of Seagulls, Duran Duran, Bow Wow Wow, Vapours, Police, Soft Cell, and other late 70's and early 80's artists.

I don't see this concept as a gay bar, although friendly to the LGBTQ crowd, but instead trying to appeal to the tremendous interest in women's sports. I think it all started , at least in the US, with the 1991 US Women's National Soccer team and their World Cup quest. Mia Hamm, Michelle Akers continuing with Brandi Chastain ripping off her jersey, goalie Hope Solo, Alex Morgan. The current team, in rebuilding phase, is still ranked #1 in the world. NCAA women's volleyball is setting attendance records every year. In 2023 U of Nebraska sold 92,003 tickets for an exhibition volleyball match. A 3rd women's pro volleyball league just started. The UNL women's team sells out their deason in about 30 minutes every year. Caitlin Clark is selling out arena throughout the WNBA. Of course women gymnastics and skating stars have been idols for decades.
