Misc July 24, 1983: To this day...I've never seen a more irate individual

Post by Bully4you »

The Pine Tar Incident.
George Brett top of the 9th and down by 1
hits a 2 run dinger off Goose Gossage,
then Billy Martin contests the HR
due to too much Pine Tar and BOOM
Mr. George Brett goes out of his mind.
As a side note, I think all three involved are
in the HOF. Crazy times.

Real surprised Brett wasn't ejected. Maybe the ump knew he was wrong. Saw that on TV while living in SW Missouri. Tim McClellan was the main ump in that brouhaha if I remember right.

Were you watching that live?
I only saw the replay.
I was in Los Angeles,
but it was all over the newscasts at the time.
George got railroaded on that one.
Bunch of [nonsense].

Yes, live. He really charged that ump and think he bumped chests with him.

Hal McRae's post game media tirade throwing stuff off his desk in his office comes to mind one of those actually clipping a media member in the face coupled with a month's full of expletives to boot.

Classic.

Hal went above and beyond on that tirade, you would have thought he was breaking up a double play with one of his patented slides. It was intense!

He didn't really get railroaded. It was an old rule, and by the book, he violated it. Gotta give Billy Martin credit. He probably held that card in his pocket for years waiting to play it on Brett. I was actually surprised that the league reversed the call.
