Santander averaged .250 with 26 HRs over 6 years (35 HRs over the last 3 years) and then just completely busts at age 30. It would have to drive you crazy as a GM to see that.

FWIW, I remember when Holliday signed his big contract with STL, I heard more than a few baseball pundits say most GMS expect a player with a new contract, new location, etc, to struggle during the first half of his first season.

Cardinals figured out how to stay off the list
Re: Ranking MLB's Worst 2025 Contract Busts After 2 Months
He seemed like a risky overpay anyways. Low OBP, low average type of player. Kind of like an Adolis Garcia who had a drop off after 3 solid years at the same age.
Re: Ranking MLB's Worst 2025 Contract Busts After 2 Months
A smart GM would have predicted it with a low-avg low-OBP guy. You don't expect the cliff to come at age 30 but it's easily predictable for year 2+ of any contract.
Adames is another example actually, but more surprising because younger. I'd attribute some of his to moving from MIL to SF parks.

I'm think it, but not saying it as to offend some in here who think all players are clean.

But do it.....get the BIG contract...........then stop......we've seen this movie over and over again for decades.
Re: Ranking MLB's Worst 2025 Contract Busts After 2 Months
The Braves really should be allowed to void the Profar contract since he likely gained it via steroids. Having two contracts on this list like the Blue Jays is horrible, at least 1 of them is only for 1 year. The Adames contract is hard to fathom what the Giants were thinking. $180M for a sub 800 OPS guy who is a below average fielder at the most important defensive position. That is the type of contract that will get the GM fired. And we complained about MO and the Fowler contract. Fowler's contract was only for $80M and he put up an 850 OPS the first year, albeit he was injured for 40 games.opti mist wrote: ↑27 May 2025 07:33 am https://www.msn.com/en-us/sports/mlb/do ... 3b84&ei=50

And they avoided the condition predicted for the list. Signing free agents.

You are an (donkey). You disparage Profar with unsubstantiated allegations. Re: Ranking MLB's Worst 2025 Contract Busts After 2 Months
This entire thread illustrates yet again why, if I owned an MLB team (yeah, right) I would never, ever, ever, nada, for no reason ever, sign any free agent. Why suddenly pay a guy 2 or 3 times what he made before just because he happened to have his best season right when his contract came due?
NO. I'd invest every one of those wasted dollars instead in scouting and player development, then six years of contract control once he makes the Show. Let the armchair GMs and talk show callers scream all they want. Let them pay $40 to park; $150 per ticket, and $45 for a ballcap at the stadium*** to see a FA-bidding team instead.
*** Yes, that was the cost of one ballcap at two spring training games we attended the last two seasons.

Wonder what kind of stuff they have come up with and how they will learn to test for it.

Good guys can't develop a test until they catch one of the cheaters (J. Profar/J. Alvarado types).
By then, rogue chemist already coming up w/new stuff.
Until the punishment (voided contract?) = the crime, the rewards (riches that set up a family for multi-generations) are too great for some NOT to cheat.

With all the position player depth they have, I could not understand (and still don't) why LAD gave Conforto $17m.opti mist wrote: ↑27 May 2025 07:33 am https://www.msn.com/en-us/sports/mlb/do ... 3b84&ei=50

They could've filled the LF spot any number of ways internally.

Lots of guys on that list that I heard the FO called various names for because they didn't sign.
