Leonardo Bernal tearing up May
For the month he is hitting .308/.393/.596 with 3 2B, 4 HR, 14 RBI, and 8 BB-9 K in 14 games in AA.
His season OPS is up to .835 and has 19 BB-21 K for the season in 29 games.
He started strong this season, went through a funk for half of April, and has really turned it on in May. Hope he keeps hitting.

Good to see. Last time I checked, the stat line was not looking pretty. I know, don't scout the stat line, but still. In a park and league that is usually very offensively friendly, I'd like to see a guy like him putting up some pretty good offensive numbers. Hopefully he can keep this up. i think it's a good sign when a player struggles at a higher level and is able to rebound and continue to play well.

I posted this on scouty's thread about the other kid catcher, C. Bloom is going to have some solid catcher trade pieces to deal with over the next few years!Futuregm2 wrote: ↑23 May 2025 10:08 am For the month he is hitting .308/.393/.596 with 3 2B, 4 HR, 14 RBI, and 8 BB-9 K in 14 games in AA.

Bernal is an excellent catcher so if he could be just league average with the bat then he'd be a solid ML catcher.

Great to hear. How does his C defense compare with Crooks?billybaseball wrote: ↑23 May 2025 11:23 am Bernal is an excellent catcher so if he could be just league average with the bat then he'd be a solid ML catcher.

With the confidence level in that to not be afraid to include Crooks in trade packages?billybaseball wrote: ↑23 May 2025 11:39 amI think Bernal has a higher ceiling all aroundJDW wrote: ↑23 May 2025 11:26 amGreat to hear. I don't think Crooks has much trade value right now. At least not enough to disrupt our minir league pitching staffs.JDW wrote: ↑23 May 2025 11:42 amWith the confidence level in that to not be afraid to include Crooks in trade packages?billybaseball wrote: ↑23 May 2025 11:39 amI think Bernal has a higher ceiling all aroundJDW wrote: ↑23 May 2025 11:26 amGreat to hear. MLB had his arm as a 55 on the scouting scale, a step below Crooks (60) and Pages (65). Bernal has thrown out 34% (10 of 29) of would be base stealers in AA. But he does have 7 passed balls (although I know minor league official scorers aren’t always the best, so I take those and errors with a grain of salt).

I am hopeful that the Cardinals will package Crooks with someone for someone at the deadline. That would open up a slot for a Bernal to be promoted to AAA to end the season. At a minimum, the offseason to move Crooks. There are teams that need a catcher. The Rays and the Guardians come to mind. Also, this Realmuto's last season in Philadelphia.

I try not to go too crazy when players put up big numbers at Springfield, but he has a pretty insane May.
And I see where they rated his arm a 55, but everything I've read has said that he has a cannon arm. I don't know how that rates on the scouting scale, but I always read that his arm was the best part of his defensive game.
Anyway, I say continue to let him cook at AA until he forces you to promote him.

I thought Crooks had cannon while Bernal had better all around defense... but I could definitely be confused/misremembering.Ronnie Dobbs wrote: ↑02 Jun 2025 10:51 am I try not to go too crazy when players put up big numbers at Springfield, but he has a pretty insane May.

Yeah, I thought Crooks was the very good all around defender and Bernal was the cannon armed fair defender with lots of room to improve, possibly even ending up a better defender due to his age and experience level.
I do some more research, but I'm too lazy right now, so maybe some of the more insightful minor league guys could provide some input.
