Or maybe trade him once JJ is ready?
Not the sexiest option, especially since BD is playing like a beast, but with Miko, Matz, Maton and Fedde off the books, and Gray done just a year later, pitching could be a hole.

I'd be thinking about Scott too, but Winn, Donovan, and Herrera gotta be top of my list.
Hell, maybe Liberatore at this point too.

Yes Liberatore fits too.

Ideally, I'd want to lock guys up through their age 31 or age 32 seasons.
For Donovan, that would be like a three year contract with a team option for 2029 (his age 32 season).

The time to do it was 1-2 years ago.

You also said, after the 2021 season, the Cards should lock up O'Neil for 4-5 years for 50ish mil.

I don’t recall opining that at all.

Your idea is a good one if you are Cardinals FO but let me ask you , now look at your deal if YOU are Donovan.
He had his first year arb. this year. With his play this year , he will get a BIG bump in Year 2 of ARB...... He is 28 years old right now . Would YOU lock yourself into a 4 year deal (3 + option ) ?> If I was Donnie , I would NOT
Plus remember in his ARB this year Cards offered $2.85 when he asked for $3.3 The arbitor picked the Cardinals $2.85 so he lost $450,000 .
So losing that 1/2 million does not leave a good taste in his mouth (yes, they know it's a business but players also say OK , I will recoup that and maybe more by going to free agency then .

I think you did, but let's move on. I don't want to have a negative back and forth with you.
Donovan is playing out of his mind now. Do you think he's more of his 2024 version or more his 2025 version?
Because I don't mind just riding out BD's contract. He will be a FA at 31 years old. He's not walking at the clip of his rookie year, and, IMO, guys with big walk rates age better.
I think you try to buy out BD until 2028 or 2029. If he's totally opposed, then you put the feelers out to trade him next offseason for player(s) who are near MLB ready.
With JJ coming up and 3 starting pitching on their way out, or about to be, might be a good idea.
It would be a Tampa-esque move.

It will take at least a 5 year contract for him to sign imo. Unless maybe they give him a 3 year $40 million contract with bonus money paid up front. That would however only buy one free agent year and makes no sense for the Cardinals.
Donovan, Winn and Scott are the best candidates to extend.

He did. He and Jeffy25 were bouncing around contract scenarios.
