Hypothetically what would it take?

Talking about the possibility of the Pirates trading Paul Skenes this summer. I don’t think it’d happen, but it is interesting to think about.

Walker/Wetherholt
Mathews
Gorman
Hence/Rainiel Rodriguez

Is it feasible that we might be in a position to be a player? He’s so young still and the idea of him, Gray, and Libby come playoff time would look really great.

I can’t imagine the rats fan base could handle that many years of torture.

For me Mathews is untouchable but everyone else is on the table.

I don't have access to BTV anymore but I think any package would have to start with Wetherholt + Hence + Walker/Gorman. Not sure if I would go much of significance after that, except for maybe one of Crooks/Bernal/Rodriguez.

Yea, I was thinking that about Mathews, too.

Looking at the trade boards, it looks like Skenes BTV is 94.8.

And some names

Gorman 10.6
Crooks 12.2
Wetherholt 41.3
Hence 10.2
Walker 0 (as of 5/17)
Saggese 15.4
Burleson 9.6
Mathews 27.6

So obviously it would have to be centered around Wetherholt.

I think I would do the trade with the people you mentioned, any combo of them. Skenes is a bonafide Ace and they do not grow on trees. Sure, Matthews could turn into that, but you just don't know.

I don't see the downside. If the team starts to play poorly, you can always trade Skenes again for another package and replenish.

IF the Pirates would trade him , could the ownership stomach trading him within the division. Wow ! That would take a lot of courage by the FO to do that . Get him to the AL and the Pirates would not see him a ton but in the NL Central ouch !

The Cardinals do have a crop of youngsters that could be good for them but if I owned the team .. no way would I trade him within the division .. but that's me !

How about you ?

Too risky to trade Wetherholt imo. Probably too risky to bankrupt the milb system also.
That said, if I had to try and form a trade: Mathews, Gorman, Crooks, Sagesse, Burly and Hence gets you up to around 85.
6 for 1 .................. don't like it. Wait, does Skenes still go with that LSU gymnast?

Nor should they. They have (or used to have) a great fanbase who deserves so much more.

Well, wasn't that long ago Carlson had a similar like trade value. Cards didn't trade him.
Wasn't that long ago Flaherty had a significantly higher trade value than Skenes. Cards didn't trade him.
In both cases, when I'd mention their trade values in real time on here, the great majority view on here is that'd you'd be close to insane for dealing either one.
When you can trade 1 guy for 5 or 6 good players/prospects, risk management suggest to strongly consider exploring what you could get. Do the homework. Don't be scared of your own shadow.

I don't remember Boots or Flaherty ever being highly valued with backing performance. When was that?

Too much to give up for a guy who will likely opt for the big bucks as soon as possible.

Carlson's wasn't that long ago, maybe 3 years, not sure. Flaherty had at least a +150 BTV, and I think his peak was ridiculously even higher.
I'd guess BTV has learned from Flaherty type past examples to not be as silly with their estimates. With Flaherty you'd have to go back to when he was at his most promising with the Cards. I also no longer have free access to BTV, and don't even consider paying for somebodies estimates.

Always appreciate when somebody list some values on here, thanks Future GM.
