Will cement head Domi get any time off for this hit on Barkov?
HERE'S THE HIT
Domi with a very cheap and dirty hit from behind on Barkov as time runs out in game four. Barkov doesn't seem to be injured since he gets right up. Nonetheless, a dangerous, dirty hit from Domi.

If, and I mean a big "IF" the league wants this type of play out of the game, you have to suspend Domi for the mere fact that could have been very, very bad. It was a clear intent to injure at that point in the game with just seconds remaining. I love hunt or be hunted playoff hockey, but that was pretty bad.

Incredibly, the Canadian broadcast (Bieksa, Elliott, etc, etc) were just fine with the hit. I imagine they wouldn't have the same opinion if the shoe was on the other foot. If Tkachuk or Bennett would have hit Matthews or Marner from behind, they would have lost their minds and would be calling for a suspension. Laughable and sad at the same time.

Domi's "punishment" is a $5,000 fine. Hey, but keep telling me the NHL wants to stop dangerous hits from behind.

Re: Will cement head Domi get any time off for this hit on Barkov?
The ONLY way the league deters this is by suspending players and huring their team. BUT the league won't do it because they don't want to affect the outcome of the series. Let's face it.. 5k to these guys is nothing.
Re: Will cement head Domi get any time off for this hit on Barkov?
It’s not about affecting outcome. The NHL and GM’s love this. We all do. It’s a tough job keeping everyone happy and preserve this intensity.
It’s hard to ride the line…tell guys to sacrifice everything then make smart decisions.
I have a problem with what Elblad did. I think he should have got 10 games.
What Domi did isn’t more dangerous than what Bennett did to Stolarz, so it is what is.
This is some of the most intense, amazing hockey that I’ve ever watched. Tip of the cap

I personally think that these players sign up for a violent sport and are paid handsomely for assuming the risk. They are free to not play. While there are times when suspensions are needed, suspending players for every illegal hit starts to affect the product.
These guys are free to retire any time. It isn't on me as a fan to feel guilty because I enjoy intense hockey and they are getting hurt.

I get what you are saying and mostly don't disagree. I still think they need to get the head shots out of the game. No idea how the accomplish.MiamiLaw wrote: ↑12 May 2025 12:32 pm I personally think that these players sign up for a violent sport and are paid handsomely for assuming the risk. My problem is the league has been really vocal about trying to curb the end of the game nonsense, and that's exactly what this was. Not sure if you noticed but there were still a couple of seconds left on the clock when the whistle blew on the play. The timekeeper let the clock expire and clearly the refs decided the Leafs were not going to score twice in two seconds so they sent everyone home. I also noticed before they made that decision FL had already sent Tkachuk out for that last shift. Imagine that chaos.
The game yesterday was full of sketchy play. The series has been full of sketchy play. The Eckman-Larson hit to Rodriquez was a blindside to the head and somehow he got away with just a minor. Mikola opened the bench door just as a Leafs player was getting checked in that spot, also really dirty. There were a couple of other head shots and then hit on Barkov at the end.

Yea for sure. It was a clear attempt to take Barkov out after the game was completely over. And there has been plenty in this series and playoffs in general. And for sure the league only has itself to blame. It has tried to excuse reckless plays that have a high chance of injury going as far back as Kadri/Binnington as far as recent times. They seem to take into account whether injury actually occurs, which is stupid. And then they also take into account whether it is a star or JAG being injured and finally whether the offender is a star or JAG.George Zipp wrote: ↑12 May 2025 12:39 pmI get what you are saying and mostly don't disagree. Overall, it just detracts from the game if they are not going to be objective.
The Blues/Jets series was probably the hardest hitting series in recent memory but it was just hard nose physical hockey. Credit to both teams.

I've been of this opinion for hockey and football where some rule changes really do effect the product, and these players are getting paid life changing money to play, a lot of people would assume that risk with the reward. But some plays gotta go, and this one is one that can leave the player a paraplegic. It's also context that matters, the game is over and we are dumping people into the boards. I might find a way to excuse it if it happened at a different point in the game and it's just people getting mixed up. But this was into to get a cheap one in late.MiamiLaw wrote: ↑12 May 2025 12:32 pm I personally think that these players sign up for a violent sport and are paid handsomely for assuming the risk. That being said, back to your initial point, I also didn't mind juicing people up for baseball but I came around on that later in life and figured, sports shouldn't require you to take life altering drugs to stay competitive because your opponent is. So I do believe there is an element of safety. If steroids were safe, I'd be back on the juice train because, chicks love the long ball.

The GM’s, players, and NHL all want this. A guy like Bennett will make a lot more money because of itMiamiLaw wrote: ↑12 May 2025 12:32 pm I personally think that these players sign up for a violent sport and are paid handsomely for assuming the risk. Take him out? No it was more about firing an arrow at the team’s heart and let them know they aren’t going anywhere. It’s a great series.MiamiLaw wrote: ↑12 May 2025 12:50 pmYea for sure. What EKblad did was more about taking someone out and seeking revenge. Nothing compares to that so far in these playoffs

Ovie just intentionally swung his stick at an opponent. At this point, the league has lost control

I'm kinda in the same boat as some. I love my some physical hockey, i don't mind some extra stuff after the whistle and some shenanigans ensuing, much of which happened in our series. You play hard, you sometimes have something boil over, but most of the extra stuff at the end of the game was fairly clean. Penalties for sure, worthy of sending guys to early showers probably, but it wasn't dirty. Thats hockey, thats what makes it fun for me to watch.
What i don't like is when players take runs at one another at the very end of the game. I don't care if it's a JAG or a star player doing it, thats the kind of stuff you have to start sending messages for. Domi looked like he had 1 goal with his run at Barkov, and it was to knock barkov past game 7 of this series. It was the worst of the night by a lot, sorry Berube what you thought was bad was not close. Don't need it to be a long suspension, a game or two will be enough. Don't want to impact a series? the NHL isn't, the players taking clear liberties in the last 10 seconds are.
