Pirates fire manager Derek Shelton

Post by Futuregm2 »

It appears that getting swept by Oli Marmol’s Cardinals was the knockout punch.

The Pirates announced Thursday that they’ve fired manager Derek Shelton, who’d been in his position for the past five-plus seasons. Bench coach Don Kelly has been elevated to the managerial position.

“Derek worked incredibly hard and sacrificed a lot over five-plus years. His family became a big part of the Pirates family, and we will miss that,” general manager Ben Cherington said in a statement within today’s press release. “He’s an incredibly smart, curious, and driven baseball leader. I believe he was the right person for the job when he was hired. I also believe that a change is now necessary. I wish Derek and his family all the best in their next chapter.”

He was never going to have the talent there to compete. Ownership is just never going to support it

Keller complained when he was taken out in the 5th inning, but I thought Shelton managed the BP pretty well that night.

Losing is one thing. Getting swept by Oli is too much.

The Pirates are one of those teams that basically are a farm system for richer markets. Without a salary cap I don’t see why they even exist.

There are certain jobs that are just career killers. Any job with the Pirates or Marlins. The A's don't win, but they don't scapegoat their front office and field people.

I hope he gets another opportunity somewhere else. I thought he was a pretty decent skipper, but nobody's going to win with that team. Save for Skenes, they just cannot develop talent. And you could argue that Skenes was pretty much a finished product when he was drafted.

it's not the manager's fault they SPENT nothing on FA. With this pitching staff, it's really sad to not go all in. That team NEEDS an offense in the worst way.

And Bubba Chandler should be up soon. Through 7 starts in AAA he has a 2.25 ERA with 41 K’s in 28 IP. 15 hits given up and 11 walks. Poor pitchers won’t have any run support.

Blessing in disguise for Shelton. Pittsburgh deserves better than Bob Nutting.

Overdue.
