Black Mirror S7

Post by 3dender »

Seems like most of society is over this series, but after a notable decline in quality the last few seasons this one is a surprising and welcome return to form, with 3 really strong episodes ("Common People," "Playthings" and "USS Callister: To Infinity") and only one clunker ("Bete Noire"). The other two are decent and sentimental if not particularly memorable.

I think this is as good a season as they've ever had, with the only misstep being an unfortunate foray into the supernatural, which is where this series was at its worst (i.e. last season's demon and werewolf episodes). There are two AI-ish eps, and one very timely one on how subscription services could get even bleaker.

And then there's the Callister ep, which is not only the first sequel they've ever done but was feature length and would actually be worth seeing in a theater. IMO it's in the conversation for the best BM episode ever. It builds on the first part brilliantly (and most importantly, logically), has a perfect ending, and Jimmi Simpson is hilarious throughout. He is so good at playing a (bleep)

But yeah, highly recommend. Also recommend rewatching the 1st Callister ep before seeing the sequel. Seeing now on looking into it that they were going to make it into a series before the writer's strike in 2023. I'm glad, cause it might have been a decent series but it was a spectacular movie.
