Friday Trivia

Post by Mort Gage »

Gentlemen's rules, no research, please.

Who is the only player to have had 500 hits for four different teams?

Question. Modern times. Say 64 forward.

He was pesky when he was with the Mets playing the Cardinals in the 70s. One of those OFers in the 1970s a few hundred hits short of 3000 that weren't going to make the HOF.

I know this but won't ruin it just yet

Let's just say one of the teams he played for was outside the USA as a clue

If it elicits a guess from you or anyone else, both.

Come on, I won't laugh at any wrong guesses. Others might, but I won't.

I went thru met outfielders. No luck. Then I looked. I’d have never guessed it, even though it’s a household name.

Good question.

Some trivia that may or may not help. An injury he sustained while crashing into an outfield wall led MLB to have padding installed at all parks. Brooke Shields (?!) won a rib eating contest at one of his restaurants.

Building on tank's post one final hint. Said team's fans nicknamed him Le Grand Orange.

That's not a hint. It's a neon billboard. Even I know the answer now (showing my age). 8)

Yes, it is Rusty Staub. By the time I started following baseball closely he was almost exclusively a PH for today's opponent.

Follow up: Staub is only one of four players to have hit a HR before the age of 20 and after 40. Who are the other three?

1 short of 500 doubles, 8 short of 300 hrs. 34 short of 1500 RBIs, on base 4000 times and obp of .362.

Not HOF.

There have been 30 players with 3000 hits that have been eligible for HoF. 27 have been voted in. Who are the other three not voted in.

In that case… Doc Cramer?
