How could this affect the baseball?

Post by OldRed »

This not a political post so Moderators don't take it down.

The Trump administration has issued a fresh warning to green card holders in the United States, advising them to behave like a guest or risk removal.

Not really it was just a question. I also wonder how many Major League players hold a green card.

If that were true a simple Google search turns up the answer

This is from an article earlier this week:

Manfred did not go into details on his discussion with Trump over foreign-born players other than to say he expressed worry.

“Given the number of foreign-born players we have, we’re always concerned about ingress and egress,” Manfred said. “We have had dialogue with the administration about this topic. And, you know, they’re very interested in sports. They understand the unique need to be able to go back and forth, and I’m going to leave it at that.”

Not quite that easy... It's difficult to give an exact number of MLB players who have green cards, as the information isn't publicly tracked.
Green cards vs. visas:
While many foreign-born players would eventually qualify for green cards after obtaining initial visas for professional athletes (like P-1 visas), not all foreign-born players are automatically granted them. Some may have other immigration statuses.

In 2024, for example, 265 internationally born players were on MLB rosters at the start of the season. This suggests a significant number of players, who could potentially have green cards or other forms of permanent residency.

Good question, Red.

Unfortunately you will be banned because you mentioned Trump in a post and the mods can't handle that name.

Suggest using the term ”the government”.

This article explains some things about visas for pro athletes, but may be outdated.

Carlos Lee, while he was still a player and had 9-figure career earnings, was on the same flight flying from Panama to Houston. To my surprise, he queued up in the "visitors" line at immigration. Perhaps some athletes are fine with a P-1 visa and aren't interested in permanent residency.
