That was a brutal hit, I was watching at the time. Wouldn't be surprised if Barkov is concussed but he might be ok, too. Right call on the major, for sure, but I think they could have nailed Hagel with high sticking as well as interference. As is he might get suspended.

Its a borderline hit to the head, at the very least its significant force used against a player who didnt have the puck which is why he got the 5.

If it was a hit to the head its a suspension for sure.

I'm not either but I'd say the blindside nature of the hit, the run taken at the player.

There blindside hits always conjure memories of the Stevens hit on Lindros, though my recollection is Lindros was carrying the puck through the neutral zone.

Intent to injure and lots of angles can be applied. You can get 5 for slashing.

Yeah, that was a stupid hit. I'm all for playing on the edge and even over the edge this time of year but Barkov didn't have the puck and it wasn't close to him. Seems like a classic "I'm gonna run his head" hit that the game needs to rid itself of.

I'll be shocked if Hagel doesn't hear from the league this morning.

From NHL rulebook regarding interference, which was the call:

56.4 Major Penalty - The Referee, at his discretion, may assess a major
penalty, based on the degree of violence, to a player guilty of
interfering with an opponent (see 56.5).

56.5 Game Misconduct Penalty – When a major penalty is imposed
under this rule for an infraction resulting in an injury of an opponent, a
game misconduct shall be imposed.

I love rough hockey, but it was a stupid hit.I don’t think he really got him in the head since Hagel is a shorter player, but it was close and there was also a whiplash kind of effect with Barkov. I hope he is ok, but guessing they sit him for the next game just to be sure. Need him healthy so the Panthers can knock off the Leafs in the 2nd round and deflate those annoying fans.

As for Hagel, I’d imagine he gets a 1 game suspension. It’s the playoffs, so you almost need to kill someone to get more than one game, but I’d be surprised if he doesn’t get suspended.

I don't think he gets suspended due to the head not being the major point on contact. It was a late hit for sure but he wasn't head hunting which I think will save him in this case. Who knows?

Yeah I doubt he gets suspended since it was a relatively normal hit (albeit rough). But he earned the major for sure. The puck was nowhere close. Hagel clearly had it in his head that he was going to hit Barkov and completely ignored that the puck was long gone.

I likewise see no suspension. Major yes, but I think Hagel was interfering where Barkov might have had a shot at the puck, if it were played lighter. He anticipated incorrectly. Was not headhunting in the classic sense. IMO

Barkov didn’t have the puck so it was completely interference. That’s why the 5 IMO.

I think he's getting at least a game for that. Defenseless player in a dangerous position and a reckless hit in general? I love big hits but we don't need that kind of stuff.

Honestly, I’m not sure it matters if he gets suspended or not. Tampa is toast. Florida going home and it wouldn’t surprise me if they close them out in 4. Kucherov looking disinterested, which is a big problem. Let’s get this series over and set up the Florida/Toronto series!
