Mikolas will not get DFA'ed
Not just because has one of the higher salaries on the team, but that he gives you just enough to hold onto
IP H R ER BB K HR PC-ST ERA
5.0 3 3 3 2 6 0 82-56 9.00 (his ERA on the season)
3 runs in 5 innings is not a quality start, but it's not a terrible start, esp. when you see he limited WHIP today. It is a winnable start. Where he to do 5 innings and 2 or 3 runs every time out, it wouldn't be great, but it would be passible. If the team is scoring it is a winnable start, if not, well, it's just a 'respectable' start.
This start can easily be spun as 'he gives you a chance to win', rather than we need more from him.
The problem is that we are paying him more than to just be passible at best.
Had he had a line like this
IP H R ER BB K HR PC-ST
5.0 6 5 5 2 4 0 82-56
Then we'd label him as bad.
---
Their stated goal this year is to find out what their younger players can do. His contract is getting in the way of that.

Re: Mikolas will not get DFA'ed
But those stats are only seen about 1 out of every three starts!
Re: Mikolas will not get DFA'ed
Mikolas actually looked really good today. One of the best things that could happen is for Mikolas to put together a decent enough season to have some value at the trade deadline. I’m not holding my breath, but today was a start.

Re: Mikolas will not get DFA'ed
That's what's known as a tease. He looks good enough that you feel he might be turning the corner, but then you end up with the s***ty numbers again at the end of the season. Kip Wells in his only season in St. Louis had some really nice starts, but at the end of the year he was 7-17 with an ERA just under 6. Mikolas is like a slot machine, you bring in 100 dollar in quarters. A few nights mights you might end out with a $300+ plus in winnings, some you may end up a little bit ahead, some nights you might break even, many nights you might start out good, but then lose much of what you brought in, and many other nights you just start out bad and lose everything or quit before you lose averything.
Even on the nights you lose, you might have a good stretch or two before you leave poorer. The point is, you can't count on coming out ahead or in Mikolas' having a strong or even decent performance. One night he could look strong over 7 innings and the next night he looks like he's throwing up batting practice for the other teaam.

Re: Mikolas will not get DFA'ed
Kip Wells had 26 starts in 2007 and had 9 QS out of them. Not exactly the same metric as Mikolas' stats, but close.
The reason for the metric QS is this I think:
- If you give up only three runs in 6 innings
- You make a fairly short game for your BP.
- With a reasonably effective BP, the game is very winnable.
They don't choose 5 innings as a QS, because over the season that extra inning in each game for your BP would tax them.
------------------------
To me to be considered an ace, or number 1 pitcher, you should have over half your starts be considered QS.

Richie are the posts you’re quoting the ones you’re replying to? I’m not sure how your responses are addressing what is quoted.
Re: Mikolas will not get DFA'ed
I was just saying it would be a good thing for the org if he could boost his trade value. Do you disagree? Did you somehow think I was convinced Miles will become an ace because he looked pretty good today? I’m confusedRichieRichSTL wrote: ↑12 Apr 2025 20:56 pm

Didn’t he give up 1 run in 6 innings in his first start got lit up
His second start 3 runs in 5 innings this start against a good team? I’m no Mikolas fan but I think he’s earned a couple of more starts anyway he won’t be released until at least the halfway point that’s how Mo rolls

Re: Mikolas will not get DFA'ed
Mikolas makes his millions pitching and costing the Cardinals games or sitting on his boat in the Atlantic by his Jupiter home.
BDWJr needs to understand the best option is to put him on the boat and bring up M. McGreevy.
He said this is the year to see "what the kids can do", right?
So why keep this Meat Man on the bump every fifth day and McGreevy wasting pitches (we know pitchers arms only have so many) in Tennessee?
Wake up Dewitt!

He’s a little on notice.
But he would be banished to the bp before a DFA.
Let the season play out a bit…

Because Bill is senile and has zero clue of the true state of the organization.rockondlouie wrote: ↑13 Apr 2025 09:37 am

The scary thing is he could soon turn things over to Fredo, aka BDWIII

Miko is under contract. This is the last year of this contract. The pitching staff is a bit influx. Also, it’s April 13.
So the idea of DFA Miko now is a little silly.

If he could earn his money or make himself more tradable that would great. I figured you know better. I'm just reiterate the unfortunate truth about the situation. But that mirrors the team. It's somewhere between a rebuild and trying to compete. In no man's land.JohnnyMO wrote: ↑12 Apr 2025 21:59 pmI was just saying it would be a good thing for the org if he could boost his trade value. No, I can just see some who seem to be on the club's payroll hyping it up as mostly reliable
