I would think that the offer sheet tactic will become a bit more prominent. But it really is a case by case basis. Army had the "perfect storm" to work from in terms of Edmonton's cap situation and the Blues cap. And don't forget, more than one team was sniffing around ...

Have to wonder if the N will close that in the next CBA ... I imagine GMs hate it. But the PA would fight something like that vociferously.

With the cap going up I really don’t think you’ll see much on that front

Yep. The increase in the cap will save teams with dumb GM’s from themselves. Too late for Edmonton, thankfully!

I also thought what Army said was interesting, basically if the offer gets too high at some point the compensation looks really good

If it’s there, sure.

I would not do that. We have enough in the cupboard as far as first rounders in the system and young great talent on the roster is that you should trade it for a proven stud or sign a stud.

I feel we are in position to compete now and will only get better.

Do you trade/sign a stud dman now? How big is our window?

We have the cheap youth, do you sign a marner? (Just spitballing I don’t necessarily want him) but with all of this youth maybe we sign a true proven stud.

12 replies and nobody has realized the Blues don’t have the draft picks needed to do it?

The answer is nobody. The Blues need to worry about their own this time around - Hofer.

Wait, there will be. The expanded cap allows teams to spend more on FA's, certainly some teams will attempt to add FA's assuming their RFA's will be playing at their original salary. My understanding is that Edmonton had the cap space to match at the beginning of the offseason & they spent too close to the cap, plus they had upcoming UFA's that if they matched would be virtually impossible to fit under the cap going forward, which then left them vulnerable to be offer sheeted.

I just checked the Oilers spent basically what it would have taken to match both Broberg & Holloway (including the 2 year contracts) on Viktor Arvidsson & Adam Henrique who combined for less goals & assists that Holloway.
