Have You Tried Steak 'n Shake's New Beef Tallow Fries?
They're going for crispness and taste, not health or political correctness, as they pursue the original McDonald's french-fry taste (McD's are still blanched in beef tallow, frozen, then fresh-fried at the restaurant in veggie oil): https://www.restaurantbusinessonline.co ... eef-tallow

Funny how there is a lot of misinformation via google on the health of using tallow vs seed oil.

Are they really going for health? They are pre fried in seed oil, slapped with corn syrup and preservatives and then frozen. Then Shipped to stores and then fried in tallow.Pink Freud wrote: ↑20 Mar 2025 18:27 pm They're going for crispness and taste, not health or political correctness, as they pursue the original McDonald's french-fry taste (McD's are still blanched in beef tallow, frozen, then fresh-fried at the restaurant in veggie oil): https://www.restaurantbusinessonline.co ... eef-tallow

Chains switched to seed oils in the 1990's because its cheaper, highly doubt fast food cares about health.Absolut wrote: ↑30 Mar 2025 15:13 pmAre they really going for health? Great Heart Brewing in Olivette prides itself in not using seed oils. Its fries are cooked in beef tallow. And they have good beer.

The "Steak" in the Name:
The name "Steak 'n Shake" comes from their most prominent food item, the "Steakburger," which was originally made from a mixture of ground round, sirloin, and T-bone.
Not sure when that stopped being true but in the early 1970's steakburgers and shakes were twice as expensive as McDonalds.

The wife and I have. They are excellent. However, we didn't go there due to this change. We had not been to a S and S in years and found ourselves in the proximity of one a couple of Saturdays ago. I got the Western Burger, and the wife got the melt. The food was good for what we needed at that time, and we will go back.
