Oscars are this Sunday night. Poor Conan.

Post by Pink Freud »

Jimmy Kimmel must be thanking his lucky stars he's not hosting this time, with having to try and make showbiz powers and poseurs laugh while many of them are living in hotels awaiting insurance payouts, and with a sure to be record-low TV viewing audience hearing about already-obscure films aimed at a razor-thin audience competing for Oscars that will be completely forgotten in due course.

Quick (No Googling!!): What was last year's Best Picture winner?
When was the last time anyone at home watched "Slumdog Millionaire"; "The Artist"; "Parasite"; "Moonlight", or "Crash"? Or, for that matter, last year's Best Picture winner?

The best 3 films I saw that were nominated :

Anatomy Of A Fall
The Holdovers
Zone Of Interest

Didn't win. The one that did was an over-wrought tepid blockbuster - had to google it.

If there is a god in heaven, please don't let "Emilia Perez" win Best Picture, and especially don't let Karla Sofia Gascon --- who has virtually disappeared since her offensive old tweets surfaced --- win Best Actress. We don't need, especially right now, any predatory yahoos' backlash against Hollywood's obsession with hohhh-mohhhh and trans SECTS you'alls.

Although a BSA win for Zoe Saldana would have me cheering; I fell in love with her alongside Christian Bale and a brutally vicious Woody Harrelson in the steel mill's small town blue-collar story "Out of the Furnace". Although all of those Christmas ski-coat commercials for Dick's Sporting Goods ----- errrr, phone commercials for T-Mobile --- nearly overexposed her.

It would be ironic, in a Three Mile Island/"The China Sydrome" sort of way, if our beloved Pope Francis expired right around a Best Picture win for "Conclave", which may spur new viewers to look into just how a new Pope is chosen. I'd love to see the set designers of "Conclave" win, because a LOT of viewers will believe the Church actually allowed filming in St. Peter's Basilica and the other Vatican temples.

If anyone besides Adrien Brody wins Best Actor, there should be an investigation. Although I don't believe his costar, the always adorable Felicity Jones, deserved a BSA nod, particularly when she didn't even appear until after the intermission.

And, if Conan flops in the extremely difficult job of hosting this particular Oscars, at least there won't be that many witnesses watching at home.

Conan is the only reason to tune in this year - though his brand of humor will be tempered by the "prestige" of the broadcast.

Already going into this disappointed knowing that 'Dune Part 2' (my favorite film of the year) will probably be shut out.

The only shot at redemption this show has is if somehow 'Flow' (my 2nd favorite film of the year) wins for best animated or international feature.

Only other person I'm rooting for is Demi Moore - not that I think she deserves to win Best Actress, but I want to see a horror movie be a part of a major award win.

Or....alternative thought, how fun it would be to see 'Emilia Perez' win all of the awards and the freak-out that would follow.

Yeah as an agent of chaos I'm kinda rooting for Emilia Perez. Would love to see the hateful actress give a victory speech with people pretending to be happy for her. Its own studio doesn't even seem to really want it to win anymore.

Have you seen every nominated film ? Did you see, for example, 'A Complete Unknown' or all of the others ? If not, your opinion isn't actually, as they say, 'informed'. Have you even seen the film you keep hating on ?

Chalumet gets my vote, of the films I've seen - the degree of difficulty of what he undertook is off the charts & he nailed it - but I haven't seen them all, either. Nor will I.

If Chalamet does win for Best Actor, he'll be the youngest ever. The previous youngest was Brody, for "The Pianist".

Hard to believe that no one under 29 ever won Best Actor, especially with all the 1950s-70s starring roles for Marlon Brando; Warren Beatty; Al Pacino; Dustin Hoffman, et al. Funny how when "The Graduate" was released Hoffman, supposedly fresh out of college, was 30 and the 40-something, predatory cougar played by Anne Bancroft was, in real life, only 36.

I haven't seen "A Complete Unknown" for one simple reason: I can't stand Bob Dylan singing, and I understand Chalamet nails it. In fact, there was a good joke on SNL's "Weekend Update" about Dylan himself supposedly praising Chalamet for singing so terribly.

I still don't know how Brady Corbet pulled off making "The Brutalist" for only $10 mil; he'll be sought after by every studio in the biz. And "Anora", the current Best Picture darling, cost only $6 mil.

I was all set to see "Anora" in a theater on a Thursday night, but something came up and I had to stay home, only to find out that was the very last screening in town of "Anora". Hopefully the Best Picture nominees will get a victory lap back into the theaters once more before disappearing into streaming irrelevance.

Last year's best picture winner was Oppenheimer, the third highest grossing film of the year, and the third highest grossing R-rated movie of all time. It was also the third highest grossing Best Picture winner of all time (only Titanic and Lord of the Rings: Return of the King grossed more).

To your point, there have been a lot of very forgettable BP winners, but I don't think Nolan's movie falls into that category. It was wildly successful in every imaginable way.

Granted all that you've said, it didn't strike me as a particularly great film - just a blockbuster. The script more-or-less glossed over Opie's titanic achievement to focus on the 'villain of the piece' drama after - i.e. the Disney treatment. jmo. I'd have given the award to 'Zone Of Interest'.

I suppose there is some expectation that the Oscars, being an industry award, must give some deference to BO metrics, but I'd prefer it to be an award based upon film merit alone, if such a thing is possible - or at least, as an aspiration.

Geez almighty, I REALLY whiffed on that one. I was thinking of "Everything Everywhere All At Once". Just slide that big plate of crow and a fork this way.

Yes, "Oppenheimer" was outstanding and a deserving BP winner, though I still can't understand how such a long movie --- and in IMAX, no less --- can deny showing the effects of the atomic bomb on Hiroshima and Nagasaki.

It seemed more like a Roman nose. I have one too. :) Too bad you don't get the guy. Most of your musical idols, though, do. Singing included, music very def. included, and yea, of course, the prose.

Po' Boy - Love And Theft (2001)

[Verse 1]
Man comes to the door, I say, “For whom are you looking?”
He says, “Your wife,” I say, “She’s busy in the kitchen cooking”
Poor boy, where you been?
I already told you, won’t tell you again

[Verse 2]
I say, “How much you want for that?” I go into the store
The man says, “Three dollars.” “All right,” I say, “Will you take four?”
Poor boy, never say die
Things will be all right by and by

[Verse 3]
Been working on the mainline, working like the devil
The game is the same, it's just up on another level
Poor boy, dressed in black
Police at your back

[Verse 4]
Poor boy in a red hot town
Out beyond the twinkling stars
Riding first-class trains, making the rounds
Trying to keep from falling between the cars

[Verse 5]
Othello told Desdemona, “I’m cold, cover me with a blanket
By the way, what happened to that poison wine?”
She said, “I gave it to you, you drank it”
Poor boy, laying them straight
Picking up the cherries falling off the plate

[Verse 6]
Time and love has branded me with its claws
Had to go to Florida dodging them Georgia laws
Poor boy, in the hotel called the Palace of Gloom
Call down to room service, says send up a room

[Verse 7]
My mother was a daughter of a wealthy farmer
My father was a traveling salesman, I never met him
When my mother died, my uncle took me in, he run a funeral parlor
He did a lot of nice things for me and I won't forget him

[Verse 8]
All I know is that I'm thrilled by your kiss
I don't know any more than this
Poor boy, picking up sticks
Build you a house out of mortar and bricks

[Verse 9]
Knocking on the door, I say, “Who is it where are you from?”
Man says, “Freddy!” I say, “Freddy who?” He say, “Freddy or not here I come”
Poor boy, 'neath the stars that shine
Washing them dishes, feeding them swine
