It's been awhile since I walked out of a movie. But with 30 minutes to go, i had no idea what was happening and didn't care to try to figure it out.

What an irritating, artsy-fartsy mess. I can't believe how many critics i like are fawning over this emperor's clothes.

The preview I saw looked like a Black version of late-era Terrence Malick... and Malick has seemed like pompous, repetitive claptrap since Tree of Life.

The preview I saw looked like a Black version of late-era Terrence Malick... and Malick has seemed like pompous, repetitive claptrap since Tree of Life.

Tree of Life was experimental, but I didn't struggle to figure out when I was supposed to know something and when I was supposed to be confused. Also, Malick gave us far fewer shots of the backs of people's heads. Nickel Boys was like a second rate found footage movie, only with sadistic racists instead of zombies.

Actually, that description makes it sound kind of cool. It isn't.

I read every day the online editions of the NY Times and LA Times. Bi-coastal film critics are, as a class, so "woke" and self-congratulatory elitist, being so close to showbiz in its leading cities, that I often dread to see films they fawn over. I've learned that those 8-minute standing ovations at film festivals are more often than not the reaction of that film's investors.

Since "Nickel Boys" is about institutional abuse suffered by black boys at the hands of bad white people, and photographed by their POV, it's likely unwatchable by the great unwashed masses....thus a sure Best Picture nominee.

For the same wokeness reason, I'm actually startled that Daniel Craig didn't get a Best Actor nom, nor did his film get a Best Picture selection, for "Queer". The title alone should be worth two stars in a coastal 5-star review.

Then again...we have 13 Oscar noms, including Best Actress (natch) for a [transgender] star in a --- I can't believe I'm saying this --- foreign language crime musical. And they wonder why movie theaters are dying.

Man, has Conan got his work cut out March 2nd. The good news is, if he bombs, relatively few will see it.
