AV Club's Best Movies of 2024

Post by todd-parker »

Annual list is below. Make of it what you will.

Plus the "best of" ballots from the individual writers:

Of course, any year-end list is subjective, but not including Dune 2 is criminal, especially when you are including Longlegs and Anora.

Wow, Furiosa and Rebel Ridge getting so much love, while not one of the four people mentions Dune 2 in their top 15? That's insane.

I just watched Furiosa this weekend, it was awful. The CGI was terrible, did Miller just get lazy or what? Due to time constraints I had to split it up into two days watching, and I literally almost forgot to come back to it the 2nd day... that's how compelling it was.

This year in American movies can only be described as demoralizing. There are only a handful of directors left making movies without a number or a colon in their titles, and they're turning in bloated director's cuts that are clearly intended to double as pilots for streaming series (I'm looking at you, Anora).

How many Hollywood movies are designed just to be watched in a theater for 2ish hours anymore? So few that, when critics see one, they fall all over themselves lavishing it with praise, even if it's only so-so (I'm looking at you, Challengers).

To say that I Saw the TV Glow is the best movie I saw this year would be to (bleep) a very good film with faint praise. In some ways it's the only real American movie I've seen in several years. People keep predicting the end of cinema, but I think it's already happened.

I just came here to vent about Smile 2 since it was on one of the lists and the writer specifically mentioned it as the most surprising movie of the year or some such thing.

Hard disagree.

Smile was a pretty boiler plate horror movie but not a bad way to spend it's running time. Expecting nothing I was surprised to enjoy it. Reading reviews of Smile 2 had me really excited because most seemed to agree that is kicked things up a notch and took the premise a little farther. Instead I watched a remix of the first movie with a nonsensical twist that renders everything that came before it pointless.

Anyway I know this isn't deep commentary on a film that would be up for any sort of awards, but I just watched this on a weekend trip by myself after the family went to bed. It was supposed to be a nice little grown up treat while away from home. Instead I found it less enjoyable than the family re-watch of Elf that took place the very next night, complete with multiple pauses for bathroom breaks or phone calls and a few fits from the baby.
