ITS EARLY but is Broberg the Blues best dman since Pronger/Mac

Post by Harry S Deals »

This kid.... again even in a loss last night he for me is again the Blues best player on the ice.

23 yrs old tied for the team lead with 9pts leads the team with +6, and doing it with limited to no PP 4th in ATOI

For NHL dmen 23 or under:

Clarke 11pts
Broberg 9 pts
Sanderson, Power 8pts

Schneider +8, Hartely, Broberg +6

Do we need to start talking a little more about exactly what Army may have landed here? This has to be viewed in the context also that lets be honest the Blues this week, no Thomas, no Joseph, no Leddy just arent that good. Also i have to believe another coach would have had Broberg as the QB on the #1 PP which is painfully obvious to anyone watching the Blues. But again this also a coach that runs Brayden Schenn out on a #1 PP, but i am digressing.
Time will tell but man at 23 and so far, early, Broberg is the #! LHD fans were asking for. What does Broberg look like at 26 or 27 years old, Hedman-ish? Maybe he puts on a few more pounds, hes not timid as it is, 10 hits in 11 games he has no problem finishing his checks. Hes just getting his feet wet, going to be great watching him develop.

Philly didn’t play him very physical last night.

The two games prior when teams started beating on him, he wilted. We’re getting into the part of the season where the grind really starts. If teams realize they can beat him up and neither he nor his teammates mount much of a response, I expect he’ll come back to earth quicker than he would normally.

It’s hairy … this upset him so much yesterday and he wants to continue

Make no mistake … he’s thinking about me and Pietrangelo this morning

I agree I think the kid is going to be really special. Like you said until he puts on a little more size we need to pick up Arber Xhexkaj to keep The other teams honest. We are just so soft our offensive guys need some protection.

He’s going to need to learn how to protect himself and earn respect

Shattenkirk used to put up 16+ points in the first 20 games of a season.

He was Bobby Orr in this place.

The title seems way pre-mature. But it's clear him doing absolutely anything positive makes some people really insecure so I get it.

Things couldn't have gone any better with Broberg thus far, consistency is what I'm watching for this year. Especially if the team sinks.

Admittedly early as noted but man he has the draft pedigree, size, speed, skill my guess is he isnt going to get worse. Peaks and valleys are to be expected for a kid with his experience level i think we are seeing something special develop

He’s one of the absolute best skaters in his draft class, with great balance, acceleration and a blazing top-gear

—EPrinkside.com 2019
Most of the time he outskates his opposing players and purely strips them of the puck with good reach and great speed.

—Hockeyprospect.com 2019
He has an active stick with good reach while trying to control the flow in his own zone.

—Future Considerations 2019
He manages the puck smartly in his own zone and is known to make smart passes to break the puck out of his defensive zone

—McKeen's Hockey 2019
Smooth defenseman, likes to take advantage of his remarkable skating ability and good reach to carry the puck up the ice

—Draftin Europe 2018
He has exceptional skating ability and exceptional command of the game in every single regard

—Craig Button - TSN 2018

He is clearly living up to the reputation he came with. With Broberg 23 he still has a couple of years to hit his "NHL maturity" at 25. It could easily be that he is one of the best dmen the Blues have had in a decade or more.

I think it is now transparent that Edmonton was setting out a path to lock this guy in on the cheap for several years and get a fix to their poor defense contracts using Broberg. I give him a lot of credit for believing in himself enough to sign that offer sheet.

I think it will take longer than a couple years. Especially with no playoff experience.
