What if you went to a Punch Brothers concert, expecting their unique approach to progressive bluegrass and their excellent musicianship, and a Bach concerto broke out?

(By the way, the fiddle player in the video is no longer with the band and has neen replaced by Brittany Haas, who in my opinion is one of the finest musicians working today.)

Re: Punch Brothers
THe Punch Brothers rule.
Chris Thile is a beautiful and joyous savant.
Chris Eldridge is his father’s son.
The featured fiddle player in the video was never a Punch Brother, he arranged the piece for the band.
I am sure the young lady who replaced Gabe Witcher, the original fiddle player ( and the guy fiddling with the beard, is excellent, but she will take a good while to fill the shoes of Gabe Witcher. He left to Produce and has four Grammy nominations as a producer to go with the six he has as a fiddler.
I have known Gabe for years in the LA music scene. His Pop is a great guy and a stellar musician himself. I see him and his upright bass every Tuesday at the Bluegrass Jam at the Bigfoot Lodge East in Atwater Village.

Re: Punch Brothers
Yea, I was referring to Witcher as the fiddle player leaving Punch Bros. The other player, and arranger, is Rob Moose. Gabe's replacement, Haas, is an absolute virtuoso. Besides contemporary American roots music she also is a student of classic, traditional American fiddle music and put out a self-titled album of such. Additionally, she works with a group of Scandinavian musicians playing traditional Norwegian and Swedish folk music. She was an original member of the Boston based group Crooked Still. Her current group is Hawktail, consisting of guitarist Jordan Tice, mandolinist Dominic Leslie. Leslie also plays with Molly Tuttle's Golden Highway. Tuttle and Haas are both from the Bay area and have been playing together since they were teens. The bassist for Hawktail is none other than Punch Brother Paul Kowert, one of the finest players active. The whole roots music borders on incestuous....Harry York 37 wrote: ↑30 Sep 2024 00:48 am THe Punch Brothers rule.

Hawktail is playing in LA this week and so is a collaborator, Aoife O’Donavan.
Hell, Nickel Creek is in town too.
After moving to the extreme edge of LA County… it’s a good hour and a half ( kinda against traffic- maybe an hour) each way….
I wish I had more energy.

Re: Punch Brothers
It looks like Hawktail is Aoife’s band ….
Maybe I can make this happen.
I saw Nickel Creek last year at a cool old theater downtown. Their music is more mature and a little more more cerebral than from when they were kids.

Brittany and Aiofe founded the Boston roots group Crooked Still.
Nickel Creek included Sara Watkins on fiddle and vocals when she was less than a freaking teenager.
Live From Here, hosted by Nickel Creek's Chris Thile, frequently featured Sarah Jarosz, the brilliant musician, singer/songwriter from Austin.
And for the last 9 or so years, Sara, Aiofe and Sarah have been touring as I'm With Her, Sara on fiddle, Sarah on mando, banjo and guitar, Aiofe on guitar. Here they are with a beautiful rendition of a John Hiatt song.

It was great when Sara and Sean played Wednesdays at the old Largo near the Fairfax District. They called it The Watkins Family Hour. No cover, drinks were reasonable and the sound was intimate and inviting.edwin drood wrote: ↑01 Oct 2024 17:35 pmThey're really one, big happy family.Harry York 37 wrote: ↑30 Sep 2024 20:41 pmLooks like they did a good job replacing Gabe.edwin drood wrote: ↑30 Sep 2024 05:29 amYea, I was referring to Witcher as the fiddle player leaving Punch Bros. They are Playing Largo at the Coronet on the night after Hawktail and Aoife play, only a few blocks away.
