as of right now (draft still long ways off), what I would love is somehow, some way, Kade Anderson falls in our lap at #5.
Extremely doubtful, but one can hope.
Otherwise, I like Willits a lot.
Willits is incredible, and I'm feeling as we approach the draft, he would be a steal at #5. I don't think he'll be available...but 1-4 could all go pitching and he might be there.
You've always been complimentary of Willits, but I've not seen you this high on him up until this point. So, you don't think Willits makes it to #5? If he doesn't, i'd think that means we'd have a shot at 1 of: Arnold, Anderson, Hernandez, or Holiday. I think i'd be stoked with any of those 5 (includes Willits)

The guy is looking good isn't he?
Another if there would be difficult to pass up. The more the better having that label.
Only need 5 players with it.
The slightly difficult thing that goes against my own drafting philosophy
is the top of the draft prep schoolers don't show a lot of power, perhaps it develops.
The team is so void in it that even though it not smart, it affects my thoughts.

So if the top 4 all go pitching wouldn't we go for Holliday?

OK draft followers ... As of June 6th , if the draft was held tomorrow and you were the Nationals , would you choose Holliday or Anderson No. 1 overall ?
If neither , name your choice .

If I were the Nats GM I would draft LHP Alan Soler
That way the Cardinals have one less pick to worry about for their choice

You only need 5 of which would be difficult to pass on.
I've only seen videos on most of these guys, and some TV.
With that limited view, I find
Holliday
Anderson
Arquette
Hernandez
Witherspoon
Then the Willits, Carlson, Parker trio as all being able to be rationalized at #5
and I don't have enough information to be disappointed in the pick.

So you don't think Arnold is worthy of the #5 pick?

Again just what I have seen. I have reservations about the delivery.
The ball is not hidden well and comes out at 6 feet. He doesn't receive that
full gain of angel from the side delivery due to less height.
Nothing more than an opinion that doesn't say he is bad just prefer the others.

One thing that amateurs following these kids are rarely privy to is the off the field info on the player .. What are his work habits for the gym? his character ? Is he a party type guy ? Does he hang with a questionable group of guys that may be trouble ? etc.
I say that as many years ago , I was a draftnik for the NFL draft ..starting ever prior Mel Kiper days, etc. I would read the football mags, watch TV college games and follow their stats. What I learned over the years is that the pro scouts knew a lot more regarding the things I listed above.
Read accounts of how pro scouting guys would come to a college campus to learn in-depth about the player. One scoout said , Rather than going to the head coach first (who would often give flowery reports ) , I would first go to the athletic team trainer. Ask him about how he worked in the weight room, did he like to go out and party with the boys, where his favorite watering hole might be... Then he would go to that bar and without diviulging who he was attempt to find out thru bartenders /patrons how he conducted himself there. . Any incidents ? etc.
He found out so much more about the total prospect than just his on field stats etc that we all see .
Then when draft came around , often some were surprised why the kid slipped later than expected . It may have been the 'red flags' .
Fans like us don't get the total picture like the guys who get paid to do this for a living.
So beware when a guy is selected over another kid .. You may be tempted to say " I don't get how we passed on Player A to take PLayer B !
We know 80 % about these kids .. it's the 20% that we do not know that the scouts know that can be the deciding factor .
PS BTW Post draft when a sports reporter says , Many thought you may pick Smith over Jones . Why did you pass on the pitcher to take the hitter?
The team will NEVER EVER say Oh we had reports on Jones that were questionable compared to Smith .. so we took Jones . Nope ! The team just say Both were under consideration at our choice and we decided to go the hitter route. The real reason is never divulged .

best Catcher prospect, Luke Stevenson cranked his 19th HR this afternoon, leading UNC to shellacking of Arizona to open their Best of 3 Super Regional, UNC 18, Arizona 2. Stevenson likely projects late 1st round. He'(poop) .250ish for most of the season, but receives most of his rave reviews for his work behind the plate.
Brendan Summerhill opened the series 1 for 5 with a single for Arizona. Summerhill is currently projected Mid 1st round, and can play all 3 OF positions well.

Thnks for the youtube story and 'blank tape' story. Reminds me of this . How being 'smart' player can do just the opposite.
Don Davey... At our local HS in Wis. we had all state C/DT who got full ride to Wisconsin. He was valedictorian of Lincoln HS.
At WIs. he was voted to GTE Academic All-American college team. Was drafted by Packers in Round 3 Was DT depth but never really was a starter. After 4th year , free agent year he realized Packers were not keeping him .. Jackxonville Jaguars were new expansion team. Coach Dick LeBeau was new jaguar coach and had Don at GB . He knew how smart he was . Said once Don knows his assignments He read the playbook in one night and knew every play down pat. He never blew play calls . So Don signed a multi- year deal and played about 9 years total in NFL never becoming a name player but a 'smart' one . An example of how a 'smart' guy can be good at pro level using his head as much as his body.

one of the dumbest picks I've ever seen. Everyone, Every Team, Every Player, Every Journalist and Every Fan knew he failed a PED test predraft, so his surprise power during his HS season wasn't legit, and when clean he wouldn't be able to produce those results again....but WE DRAFTED him anyway.
