Datallo - for a college third baseman, hit 3 home runs in 271 PAs.

Enjoy the rest of the draft.

They were really scouting the Hyannis Harbor Hawks this year, second Harbor Hawk drafted.
This 3B made the CCL West All-Stars!

what do you think so far? I'm not upset with this draft at all. I see what they see in some of these lottery tickets. And yesterday was a surprisingly good day from the Cards draft staff. The Tennessee Scout yelled louder than the BIG12 Scout did this year. And the California/West Coast Scout has been silent this year.

This draft has Bloom's fingerprints all over it.
The position players picked all have one thing in common: ability to put the ball in play.
Not a power hitting / high K pick among them.
Folks can debate whether that is a good thing or not, but that is very clearly the design here.
It also explains the recently announced move (3 years too late) of moving Herrera to the outfield.
Obviously connected.

We've gone off the BA list with the 9th round pick. I'll check later for the rest of the picks.

Still hoping for a higher end prospect after round 10. But who knows?

Cheers.

You guys think Doyle slides right into #2 in the STL Cards top 30?

West Coast scout is getting attention with the last few picks. So at least he got thrown a bone.

I think this has been a great draft so far. Obviously hard to know the financials required, College transfers, HS commitments etc. But overall I like our picks.

Jared Jones is likely a 4A player, ala Luken Baker

As for the being cheap thing, yes Dewitt is cheap but not in this scenario. The Cards will have an allotted draft pool value and will likely go to the 110% value of that pool. They will throw some money at HS talent in the 11th-20th rounds to see if they'll bite, so yes they'll use some of the savings but unlike most years the Cards have not taken a surefire, under slot guy. No 4 yr college SR's so far (9 rounds as I type this) and that to my shotty memory is something I haven't seen them do before.

Everyone drafted is likely going to get close to slot since each of the pics have eligibility (leverage) and if the Cards undercut them with an offer they go back to school and we use lose that pool $.

Why you don't take a flier on a Bauer or other top 100 players remaining until after the 10th round, when you're not at risk of losing that valuable allocation.

Cards are cheap, they might be a risk adverse drafting style, floor over upside organization....but they are not playing a cheap angle in the draft as some might suggest. They're just taking players they like and the fact we don't see a low # ranking next to their name, we jump to conclusions that they reached or are being cheap. Nope, they are doing what they're supposed to be doing as a Club, relying on the their scouts and analytics dept.

PS...this is not the typical high floor, low ceiling safe draft, there is a lot of risk but a ton of upside. I am impressed, this has Bloom's fingerprints all over it.

The Gonzaga Pitcher is a long shot.
Why waste your 7th round pick on an injured long shot, who has no track record of success.
They are picking "swing-and-miss" stuff.
Again, very clear that was their priority going into this.

I think this is a point well made on the position players mostly being contact hitters with low K rates. It seems to be their top skill.

I like the draft for the most part, I like the 4th round but admit that the ECU reliever and the Gonzaga injury fella weren't my favorites.

1 thru 3 were fine, but we shall see won't we.

With 4 picks in the top 89 spots, the Cardinals are in very unusual territory.
It will cost around 12M to get those 4 under contract.
Agree that why DeWitt is cheap overall, that won't be the case with this draft.

In my uninformed opinion, I like the Graham pick. There's upside/hope. Miura, Weingartner, and Dattalo aren't much to dream on based off stat sheets and listed height/weights.

Aside: it's great to see Picklefork contributing again on a more regular basis.
