Re: Tuesday dealine to protect from Rule 5
They currently then, do not have any open roster space to add anyone else. There are players on the 40 man that do not belong there.
Hopefully there are trades in the works to be rid of them.

Re: Tuesday dealine to protect from Rule 5
My guess on who we will lose at the Winter Meetings R5 Draft:
90-100% sure we lose Randel Clemente....teams love that gas can type arm...even if it's wild, he's still showing improvement. He'll get drafted and spend the year with a AAA team somewhere.
40-60% sure we lose Darlin Saladin, his AFL showing shocked everyone, made him slightly more desirable. His small frame and 2025 Peoria season aren't doing him any favors, though.
60-70% sure we lose Cade Winquest...hard staying healthy enough for a full season, but showed when healthy he can be a savvy enough to navigate through your lineup....AA draft
80-90% we lose Pete Hansen...no fastball to write home to mom about, but he still throws strikes and was solid in a tough league this year. Going to miss you, Pete.... G/L
71.3% chance we lose Blaze Jordan...someone will take him and start him in the Majors next season...Tampa? Marlins? I would've said the Pirates, but they seem to be serious about winning next year...by recent reports.

Re: Tuesday dealine to protect from Rule 5
To me this shows how bad the Cardinals did at the trade deadline. Arguably the best prospect they got back, isn’t even being protected. Plus some good arms left to be taken, when they could have been added to sweeten deals to reap a better return on those trades.craviduce wrote: ↑18 Nov 2025 17:24 pm My guess on who we will lose at the Winter Meetings R5 Draft:

Are we sure Mo isn’t still in charge, but just in hiding?
Re: Tuesday dealine to protect from Rule 5
While it is pretty irrelevant, I am a bit surprised. He might have had a tiny bit of throw in value in a trade, while I doubt Koperniak has any. Its also surprising to keep Koperniak over Blaze Jordan who would seem to have more value. Also some of the pitching prospects you mentioned compared to say Nick Racquet. Decisions at the margin. But we should trust that Bloom figured this out, until he is deemed to not be trustworthy...craviduce wrote: ↑18 Nov 2025 17:14 pmjust went back to Dgoold's twitter....and it was a DFA of RHP Jorge AlcalaICCFIM2 wrote: ↑18 Nov 2025 17:12 pmYou were spot on. I wonder what the corresponding roster move was to add the 4th player? 40 man is at 41 until they announce the move

Also that's 40. They'll have to open a spot to select a Rule V pick. Plenty of time.

"71.3% chance we lose Blaze Jordan...someone will take him and start him in the Majors next season". I don't see that happening. What about Matt Koperniak? Who you thought was a better player than Alec Burleson. Wouldn't some team take somebody better than the Silver Slugger Award winner?craviduce wrote: ↑18 Nov 2025 17:24 pm My guess on who we will lose at the Winter Meetings R5 Draft:

Re: Tuesday dealine to protect from Rule 5
It doesn't make sense that they kept an almost 28 year old Koperniak over Jordan who is about to turn 23. There was other 40-man fluff to wave also.RunSup wrote: ↑18 Nov 2025 17:37 pmHmmm... No Blaze Jordan.craviduce wrote: ↑18 Nov 2025 17:08 pm Derrick Goold

I just like things to make sense. That's all. Are we waiting on another transaction announcement? Maybe Goold or others will ask about the reasoning.
Re: Tuesday dealine to protect from Rule 5
Well, Bloom is starting to concern me. Other than hiring some people who “ seem” to be upgrades to what the Cardinals had, he hasn’t done anything I agree with yet. Keeping Oli, the current 40 man roster, the moves made at the trade deadline, and his wanting to trade Donovan. These are just the things I can think of at the moment. He talks a good talk, but so far hasn’t shown he can walk the walk. Not feeling all that optimistic, I’m sad to say.

They aren't trying to determine who is the best player, who is the most important to the Cardinals, or who has the best future. They are trying to decide who would be the most likely to be claimed by another team AND KEPT ON THEIR MAJOR LEAGUE ROSTER ALL SEASON IN 2026.RunSup wrote: ↑18 Nov 2025 17:47 pmIt doesn't make sense that they kept an almost 28 year old Koperniak over Jordan who is about to turn 23. Re: Tuesday dealine to protect from Rule 5
Sure. But Jordan is more likely to be claimed than Koperniak and potentially more valuable. The Cardinals lose little value if Koperniak goes. No question.Talkin' Baseball wrote: ↑18 Nov 2025 17:52 pmThey aren't trying to determine who is the best player, who is the most important to the Cardinals, or who has the best future. Plus the roster has multiple scrub relievers that are replaceable.
So Matz was traded for nothing. Ok. No Crocodile tears shed. It's the Bloom era now. Moving on.
College basketball is more interesting.

Re: Tuesday dealine to protect from Rule 5
On July 31, 2025, the Boston Red Sox traded Blaze Jordan to the St. Louis Cardinals for left-handed pitcher Steven Matz.
Matz pitched 21.2 innings for the Red Sox and then became a free agent. The Red Sox felt Jordan was worth 2 months of Matz at the time of the trade.
Jordan joined the Memphis Redbirds and hit .198 .242 .366 .608 in 198 plate appearances. I'm pretty sure the Memphis performance did not enhance his trade value to a level higher than a 2-month rental of MLB relief pitcher, Stephen Matz.
Jordan's career miLB numbers as a DH or corner infielder...
.248 .291 .423 .714 AAA (in 368 PA)
.272 .328 .419 .747 AA (in 692 PA)
I don't think we need to fret about him!

Re: Tuesday dealine to protect from Rule 5
Just because these guys (except Alcala) survived the R5 protection deadline, doesn't mean they will survive the winter.cardstatman wrote: ↑16 Nov 2025 14:41 pm Guys still on the roster who could be dropped to make room for R5 protection or other additions...
Roycroft
Robberse
Raquet
King
Alcala
Koperniak
Pozo
others?
The Cardinals acquired pitcher Jorge Alcalá by claiming him off waivers from the Boston Red Sox on August 7, 2025
The Cards may be simply waiting until they will be less likely to be claimed and they can be sent to Memphis (some of them). They will likely make some roster additions in the next few months.

Re: Tuesday dealine to protect from Rule 5
Personally, I might have DFA'd Robberse and protected Jordan, but anyone who saw Jordan hit for Memphis last year has no thought of putting him on a ML roster for an entire season.RunSup wrote: ↑18 Nov 2025 18:04 pmSure.
