$7.1M in potential non-tender savings below.
$2.1M King - I would nontender him
$2.1M Alcala - I would keep him and DFA Roycroft
$2.9M Gorman!
Unless someone in St Louis has a new idea on how to rescue Gorman, it could be time to cut the losses after 2 consecutive dismal seasons.
Last year he delivered negative $1.5M in value. He's been paid minimum wage the past 2 years and still managed to not earn his salary.
After 1581 plate appearances at 28.7 runs below average, will we pay him another $2.9M to continue to drag down the team and take at bats away from others? Even with Arenado gone, he has nowhere to play assuming Wetherholt's time has come. Even with Wetherholt and Donovan gone, it is questionable if he is better than Fermin, Saggese, or Prieto. No speed. No defense. No bat. Decreasing power. Lefty swinger. The league knows how to get him out. What are his positive attributes again? What potential are supposed to be seeing? Talk about well hidden potential!
I wonder if Tampa Bay would pay a player like him $2.9M in 2026?
Fascinating that this comment hasn't received a response.
IMO, you pay on upside projections. The Cardinals payroll is to a point that these
little contracts shouldn't matter as much as the projected upside. Which is a strong
reason for your choice in Alcala over Roycroft. The FO either sees some
upside or they don't but a couple million isn't much over minimal investment for a player
who has performed at MLB levels.

Agree Gorman continues to prove he sucks and there’s still some people that don’t believe him no matter how much he proves it. He will go the way of Carlson on Hes only 24 oh he’s only 25 oh he’s only 26 but yet will continually prove he does in fact suck

Cards HAVE TO protect Bernal, Baez and Mautz, right?
At a minimum. What do you think about Pete Hansen and Cooper Hjerpe?
who would take Hjerpe? Isn't the rule that anyone selected has to be added to and remain on the other team's 40 man or they come back to us? Teams aren't just going to draft long shots that aren't worth a 40 man slot.
Hjerpe has that type of potential, that some team might just jump.

Guys still on the roster who could be dropped to make room for R5 protection or other additions...
Roycroft
Robberse
Raquet
King
Alcala
Koperniak
Pozo
others?
i dont think king is close to drop status. he had a bad down season with injuries but was good the 2 years prior for us. relievers hace a down year and bounce back all the time.
R5 protection deadline in 50ish minutes....53 by my clock
currently 37 spots on the 40man are full.
Needing protecting...again:
Josh Baez, Leonardo Bernal, Cooper Hjerpe, Brycen Mautz, Pete Hansen, Blaze Jordan, Gerardo Salas, Darlin Saladin, Ramon Mendoza, Miguel Ugueto, Hancel Rincon, Cade Winquest

but wait, there's more....just pulled up our 2022 Draft... Brody Moore, Hunter Hayes, DJ Carpenter, Tanner Jacobson, Max Rajcic....also Randel Clemente.
I'm sure there are a few more, especially on the Latin side.
Baez is the only HS draftee from the 2021 draft ...and he'll be protected.
Well, I guess some things aren’t changing under Bloom, still no word on what players are being protected and who might have been cut! It’s just maddening how slow the Cardinals are about reporting stuff!

no Blaze Jordan.....
I wonder what the corresponding roster move was to add the 4th player? 40 man is at 41 until they announce the move
they join Bryan Torres who was added last week....hmmm, crazy stuff
Trade for Jordan and he wasn't awful, but he wasn't what we expected either....now the waiting game...does he get picked the 2nd week of December or Traded before then?

read above you...I posted it from DGoold's twitter....4 players added to 40 man roster.
there needs to be a removal from the roster, I'm sure that move will trickle in eventually
