You stand up for your teammates.
You have a clubhouse to consider and backs to cover.

“Every hit by pitch is scary,” the star first baseman told the St. Louis Post-Dispatch after Tuesday’s 1-0 loss to the Pirates, during which he was hit for the second time in a week. “I wish it hit me in a different spot. Every hit-by-pitch on the hand is really scary… Probably, it can be bad luck. It can be they’re trying to go in and off the plate. And we’re not protecting anybody, [so] that’s going to keep happening.”
“I know they’re not trying to hit me in the hand,” Contreras added. “I’m a human being. It gets old. I want to play. I want to stay in the game. I don’t know what to say about it. Protect myself, and hopefully somebody protects me.”
Yeah, he's upset.

If you look at his career number he has led his team in hbp most years during his career. He needs to look inward. He wears that oversize pad on his arm so he can dive into the ball.

Look at where the pitch was. It was high but not that far inside. It was inside but I've see pitches that far inside called a strike. It was maybe the width of a baseball inside. He sets up with his elbow just above the high inside corner. That's why he gets hit a lot.

Agreed. The common denominator is him...

I don't know but the Cubs seem to be doing okay without him and his claim that "they are trying to go "in and off the plate" is wrong. The pitch was maybe the width of a baseball inside. He he does it thinking the big pad will protect him.
