illiniriles wrote: 23 Jun 2025 09:45 am Hi JDW! You are one of those good baseball men that I was talking about. And in answer to your question: yes, to all those things you mentioned. A good example of a DH that wasn't that complete of a ball player was Big Papi for Boston. He almost single-handedly destroyed the Redbirds in what was it '04? And now is a HOFer. He's an icon in Boston and by all accounts genuinely a terrific guy. But if you'll remember, in that series, everything he hit was a frozen rope. Even the foul balls. It just proves the point that not everyone that is using (allegedly) is a jag. And sure, there is a place for the DH. In my opinion that is the American League. Lastly, let me just add that at least Big Mac had the class to retire leaving $10 million per on the table. I would have been spending every day in the trainer's room and dragging my hurting (donkey) out there hitting home runs on one leg until I collected every last dollar I had on my contract. Oh well, there I go rambling again, like the narrator in "The Big Lebowski". You got any of that good sasparilla?
Big Papi was also a roid boy. The let him in but not Rose.
Rose broke the absolute cardinal rule of MLB. The sign prohibiting gambling on the game is in every clubhouse in multiple places and languages. Rose thought the rules didn't apply to him, lied about his gambling for years, even lied about betting on games in which he was involved when he initially admitted to gambling. He shouldn't be in, EVER.

Ortiz only ever tested positive in the "survey" test in 2003 - a test just for MLB and the player's association to see how widespread PED use was.
True but roids determined the outcome of thousands of games and several world series champions. None of those guys should be in the HOF nor should their stats be recognized.
Sure, but he didn't fail a test other than that "survey" test. There was no testing prior to that, and mandatory testing with penalties didn't start 'til 2004.

In case you're missing the point again, you're comparing apples to crankshafts.
He failed a roid test. Shouldn't be in the HOF.
Yet here you are simping for Rose.

Remarked that attendance of 30,000 per game was down 10,000 per game from 2 years ago. Is that correct?
Only 27,000 announced for their archrival. We can remove kids in school and cold temps from the possible reasons. Now it looks like some combination of the fans still not believing in this year's team, and economic anxiety in a region that isn't particularly wealthy to begin with. Anyone anticipating a payroll bump in the next 2-3 years will likely be disappointed.
So 27K announced?? For the 1st place Cubbies WITH Chicago folks in town?? BDW/MO/III have royally screwed their Golden Goose into the ground. Only a big name player, big name manager, or dominate 100 win type team will fix this…..fans have checked out

Wonder why. All the other major sports seem to have little trouble filling their arena.

Pujols, Yadi, Waino, C. Carp, Edmonds, Rolen, Holiday, Berkman, always some fan favorite role player, TLR/Dunc hard 9 with always some kind of drama with TLR and the other team…..Great entertainment. Who’s the player draw now? Oli is a (bleep).

I’ve said we have no - “ face of the team” type player, like Pujols .

Unfortunately very few teams have a Face player. And another Pujols or Yadi is gonna be hard to duplicate.

Well you don’t often have a top 10 player in history, but think of past TEAMS
Whitey Ball/Running Redbirds
Then
LaRussa was the draw when he was first hired
Then
McGwire
Then
Pujols
The Cardinals really haven’t had an identity 10-12 yrs

I had tickets with a group of people last night which included my wife, daughter and son-in-law and others and I gave my ticket to a kid that they took in my place because of the heat. My wife said it was miserable in the heat.

But ten years later, now, it is a bit hotter, seems to the skin, and this gen of fan isn’t heat friendly.

Not all that mysterious. NBA and NHL play in indoor arenas which do not seat anywhere near 27K. They play half the number of games MLB plays. The NFL plays 17 games per regular season.

I did think of smaller arenas. Especially hockey. Does environment have any effects.

True it was a hot one, but the overall trend has to terrify the DeWitts. Last year they averaged 35,500 announced, 2.9mm on the season. That was the first non-pandemic year since 2003 they did not reach three million. This year they are only announcing 30,000 per game. It looks close whether they will clear 2.5mm on the year.

This is on BDW. If they had a real bat(like Tucker) in OF and perhaps another top starter with a Francona/Bochy in the dugout this a different situation
As it is now this FEELS like little more than a glorified AAAA outfit
