Tuna, Nine Lives, HiFi, Good Trouble (kinda, not really), Wheels, great string of records. Same for Styx until Kilroy. And Rush. And Journey.

Having said that, truly, the amount of great "new" rock music the past 20 years is overwhelming: Red Sun Rising, Shinedown, Sleep Token, Seether, A Perfect Circle, anything with Chris Cornell, etc.

I listened to old stuff either through nostalgia or forced from canned music at grocery store!

As a huge REO fan, the Live album is their best by a country mile.

As far as the earlier posts about Boston’s debut, it WAS great until radio beat it to death for the last 50 years. I much prefer Don’t Look Back now. Tunes like, Used to Bad News, A Man I’ll Never Be, Party, Feelin Satisfied, great stuff.

I'm listening to a live recording of theirs from 1979 right now during the Nine Lives tour. Richrath was just amazing. REO from 1977 until 1982 were hands down the best live performers out there. Don't get me started on that dreadful Wheels album...

Consider myself blessed to have heard Gary's Guitar Solo live a few times. Absolute shredder with an ear for melody and phrasing. Hardcore Gibson with Marshall stack, no finger-tapping and only one record with whammy bar. And that crybaby wah pedal .....

Man, am I envious of you sir! I wasn’t born until 1981, so I never came close to seeing Gary. He’s my guitar idol though, just ahead of Rory Gallagher. Richrath had so much more to offer us musically, but depression, alcohol and drugs, not to mention Cronin destroying the band, did Gary in. What concerts did you see and what were the venues?

I have seen them live almost 50x, including plenty with Gary. I always laugh at the notion that Cronin “destroyed” the band. He was with then during the 70s too so why wasn’t the band destroyed then? Epic was going to drop them until Hi Infidelity came out. A lot of bands had to change their sound to keep afloat. Look at Aerosmith starting with Permanent Vacation.

Cronin helped create for sure until he was allowed full control of the band after his second number one hit “Can’t Fight This Feeling”. Richrath was demoted and they sank like The Titanic. It was ok having a ballad or two per album, but Cronin went full on soft and killed them. They lost their contract when Gary left.

Speaking of a "Gary", albeit a different one. I grew up a huge Rush fan, and went to the Grace Under Pressure tour. The opening act was this guitarist who just blew my socks off. Left the show going "who the heck was that!?!" as I thought he put on a better show than Rush that evening. I hadn't expanded my music taste at that point, but Gary Moore definitely got me started on a journey... Still ongoing...

Not quite. The three LP's released after Green left all had their moments, especially those featuring Danny Kirwan.

I’d have done anything to be born in 1951 or 1961 instead of ‘81. I’m decades late seeing my favorite bands in their prime, and I’m super envious of anyone that got to see the great, and by far most underrated guitarist in rock, Gary Richrath. I do have a guitar pic, signed albums, and several original REO posters from the ‘78-‘81 era I’ve found over the years. I’m facebook friends with their sound engineer from the glory years. He has boxes and boxes of live REO recordings just waiting to be uploaded on YouTube, but he only drops stuff super occasionally. I’ve been trying to find a way to get these recordings from him and do the work myself, but no luck thus far. My nightmare scenario has him passing away and nobody has any clue what he left behind…

I saw several concerts there, Robin Trower, America, Three Dog Night, Al Stewart etc. Wasn't aware of Gary ever playing there or I would have gone for sure!
