Why Are Most people on this Board in their 60s, 70s, 80s?

Someone did a poll here a while ago and most of the board is in their retirement ages.

Why do you think that is? I'm 41 and i think i'm one of the younger ones on here

possibilities:
-the younger crowd consumes their info more with apps, podcasts?
-Baseball doesn't quite draw in the younger generations like the NFL, NBA does? MLB doesn't seem as cool to them?

your thoughts

1) baseball (and Blues hockey for that matter) don't draw as much fanbase analysis and interaction from younger people
2) the stltoday.com forums' format has become borderline archaic. Younger crowds stick to the more contemporary outlets
3) There's about 3-5 trolls (especially on the Blues side) who are basically carmudgeon annihilators

All swipes at the younger generations aside, the simple fact is that those of us who are retired, or at least semi-retired, have more time for this sort of thing. It is also a generational thing, in that those of us who are older tend to write paragraphs. Younger folks are more into the 200 character limits of modern quick social media. It is what they grew up with. We grew up with pencils and paper and letters. Then we got email, which was essentially an instant letter, but still had form and structure, at least at the beginning. I have two son-in-laws, both under 30, who are fine young men. They both will make excellent dads when the time comes. I am not going to condemn the whole younger generation. They have been exposed to different sorts of communication forms their whole lives. My 2 cents.....

Kudos for astute observations. When email was still a hot thing, I used to get annoyed with stream of consciousness emails with no paragraphs, little punctuation, etc.

And then Twitter came along, and people no longer felt the need to support what they were opining about with facts or logic. The state of discourse in this country is a mess.

Speak for yourself, my kids are teens and they are already raring to shake the world. They no longer play video games, not even with their Dad. I'd say if your kids are the videogame/basement dweller type, then congrats for making them that way.

My wife and I were Cardinal fanatics until and after having these kids, but for these kids baseball bores them to tears. Judging from the product in their lives. can you blame them?

It's a generalization (bleep). Most would agree with my sentiment and young ladies I know, tell me that guys these days lack cajones to approach a woman.

My girls don't play video games and find grown men playing them ridiculous.

IMO both of your thought are valid.

My 2 sons played youth ball, one played Legion ball. They like baseball but aren’t huge fans. They’ll go to 2 or 3 Cardinal games each year. They’re 31 and 30 years old and just don’t share my passion for baseball.

I love them anyway.

Have a 16-year old and we have a disconnect on how we watch baseball. If we are out, I won’t check the score, he will need to immediately know the score. He doesn’t have the attention span to start the game at the beginning when we miss the beginning. It drives him nuts I want to watch from the beginning fast forwarding through commercials. He wants to go to live time skipping what we missed.

He will be transitioning from Babe Ruth to Legion in 26, so we will see how that goes.

Many of us played "Indian ball" and situation baseball where we made up situations and had to make the play for the situation. We played "Little League", Khoury League and played on traveling teams and High School teams and many went on to play in college. It was a game we loved and still love.

Very true. But I never dreamed about being a major league player.

I played baseball from 8 to about 35 with softball mixed in as I got older. I am left handed so that almost automatically made me a pitcher because there weren't many southpaws back then. I have been a fan my whole life and now that I'm retired I have more time for this nonsense. Both of my daughters (29 & 37) are fans but they don't watch as much now that they're on their own but they still follow the Cardinals (and the Blues and mizzou). I don't consider 67 as old but it's definitely not young.

I suspect it’s because many of us were raised by baseball fans in a time when keeping a scorecard with a pencil was commonplace. Riding your bike to school was too. Catching crawdads and fishing were hobbies. Coming home when the street lights came on was the rule. Harry Carey and Jack Buck were gods. 1120 KMOX was always there, for every pitch, on a transistor radio. Baseball is in our blood. We wouldn’t know life without it.

Well said..I played D1 Football and Bassball but I loved and always hoped to be in the majors...and Field of Dreams romanticized America's favorite past time for many of us.

They also grew up around and witnessed the game of baseball that was in several ways superior to the current game
