Cards sent Red Sox $20 million in the deal, per what I'm seeing on X.

Good deal
Derrick Goold
@dgoold
Sonny Gray has agreed to waive no-trade clause for a trade to Boston Red Sox, per source, and the deal is happening. Details of the agreement -- adjusting contract, players returning -- are being finalized by both teams.

Re: Sonny Gray to the Redsox
All-in-all, it sounds like the Cardinals get the kind of ML-ready, higher floor/if lower ceiling prospect (Fitts) that I thought they would get for Gray, and a somewhat lower floor/higher ceiling prospect (Clarke) who is maybe a couple of years away.
Hopefully the Cardinals pitcher development system is ready to help Clarke develop a third pitch and get him the weapons he needs to be a middle-to-front of rotation SP in the majors by the end of 2027/ST 2028.
I like it overall.

Clarke is simultaneously a good prospect and a lottery ticket type guy. Huge ceiling but I could see him never seeing the majors. Honestly I think it's a great trade.

No irony that blooms first deal is with Boston.

Re: Sonny Gray to the Redsox
Yeah, I could definitely see him as a not-small chance of not being a starter and being a reliever instead. But...every team needs a shut-down lefty in the late innings. I'd say it's still a good-get.
I'm intrigued by Fitts. Big dude, topped out at 99. Good fastball. Has a reputation as a competitor. I'm not saying he's going to be an ace, but I like this guy.

On the surface appears to be an outstanding potential return + salary relief!mattmitchl44 wrote: ↑25 Nov 2025 10:58 am All-in-all, it sounds like the Cardinals get the kind of ML-ready, higher floor/if lower ceiling prospect (Fitts) that I thought they would get for Gray, and a somewhat lower floor/higher ceiling prospect (Clarke) who is maybe a couple of years away.

Just the kind of prospect I was hoping for when Bloom dealt Gray.
Now lets get another one, maybe even a major league starter w/years of control left, for Donny.
Re: Sonny Gray to the Redsox
Will the Cardinals be hiring Rusty Kuntz as a coach now that they’ve acquired Dick Fitts in this trade?

FWIW - BTV grades this as 23.7 in value to the Cardinals vs. 10.6 in value (with the $20M thrown in) to Boston.
