If they actually sign a real OF and SP, it would take some of the sting off. We only have $100 million payroll next year.moose-and-squirrel wrote: ↑31 Jul 2025 08:48 amyup.. I think an argument could be made that the Cards got more value out of this deal than the Helsley trade.
A rich man’s Luken Baker? I dig that description.
One of the things I really like about Blaze Jordan

Good god, what makes any of you think that you are going to get MLB ready talent for Ryan Helsley and/or Steven Matz?

I like this deal though admittedly have only read national/local reports.
But obviously C. Bloom knows him and see's somethings there.
Good deal for Bloom, hope it pans out.

All of these unathletic slow power hitters is really stupid roster construction when you take into account the ball park they play in. Either build a speedy team or bring in the fences.tyoung12290 wrote: ↑31 Jul 2025 08:19 am Feels similar to burleson and Herrera so we are close to having at least 3 1B/DH types with like what 20 home run upside. Isolation good return and he’s only 22 so can probably wait out Contreras but idk kind weird fit with how cards are currently constructed. Maybe burly is getting moved next.

Ummm.... duh? But Matz wasn't a salary dump, they got value back for him. It wasn't about unloading his salary.OldRed wrote: ↑31 Jul 2025 08:07 amIn my opinion, both of these trades were about unloading Matz salary and getting anything they could for Helsley before he becomes a free agent. Both trades had nothing to do with improving the Major League team at this time.12xu wrote: ↑31 Jul 2025 08:04 am I like his bat, primarily his power from the right side. So now the Cardinals have an abundance of corner infielders and DH types - Arenado, Contreras, Burleson, Gorman, and Blaze Jordan. There has also been discussion on this forum about moving Walker back to corner IF since he has been suspect in RF. There is also a glut of middle IF with Winn, Wetherholt, Donovan, Saggese, and Gorman. Add to both 2b, ss, and 3b the recently acquired Jesus Baez.
Seems like some of these assets need to be traded.
If you expected otherwise, shame on you, you don't understand what they're doing.
They've said 100x that it's a reset. They're resetting their payroll. They're resetting their player development framework. Nothing they're doing today is intended to help the major league team today.

You didn't need to re-confirm that you don't understand the phrase you're choosing to misuse... but thanks?OldRed wrote: ↑31 Jul 2025 08:02 am.500 team going nowhere. YES it is "addition by subtraction" if Boston pays his contract. I wouldn't e surprised if Matz isn't injured in his first outing for the Red Sox.An Old Friend wrote: ↑31 Jul 2025 07:59 am![]()

That isn't what that means.
That concept implies that your team got better by removing the player. You're suggesting that Matz was holding the unit back.
The Cardinals bullpen is worse without Matz... so definitely NOT "addition by subtraction"

Planning for multiple years away only? Then its a rebuild, not a reset. And oh, is it a reset of the checking book, as they do not intend to spend the money the retract off the books with their "quiet off season" coming up. Its a money grab to keep in their pockets.
