Re: Doyle MLB ready?
Your concern was certainly something Randy Flores and his staff needed to address .
When Doyle came to Tenn. he was quite chunky and ran out of gas. Manager Tony Vitello told him to have the stamina to be a starter (and not bullpen uy he would need t get in top shape). Vitello put him with Vols weight lifting /nutritionist guys . Doyle went to gym religiously (daily routine) and dropped 19 pounds resulting in top notch year.
Flores in a video said he and his staff checked with both those guys to determine how committed Doyle was in working out. They got positive results back. The question will be .. Will Doyle continue that dedication with Cardinal trainers too ? It sure seems like it .. seeing his results he certainly sees the effect working out daily in the gym and his nutrition too.
“Being in the weight room and working with [Tennessee’s strength coach and nutritionist] was a huge thing for me, because obviously I needed to lose some weight when I got to Tennessee to make sure I was in shape,” said Doyle, the highest drafted left-handed pitcher in the Cards’ system since Donovan Osborne went No. 13 in 1990. “I had fun with it when I was in the gym and made it part of my everyday routine. I got in a good routine whether it was a start day or a Tuesday bullpen. It was really beneficial to me, and now it’s something I do to enjoy. It really helped me on the field.”

It would be interesting to see how Doyle would do at AA sometime this season after he signs.imetsatchelpaige wrote: ↑14 Jul 2025 10:55 amIt wasn’t a few, it was one, and he’s insane. All right, my friends, answer this question: how many major league players have made the jump from high school or college directly to the majors? Second question: how many of them were pitchers?
Go ahead-I’m listening.

J. Abbott
D. Dreifort

T. Conroy
I don't think S. Koufax played minor league ball, neither did D. Winfield, B. Horner, P. Incavelia or J. Olerud.
And who can forget D. Clyde!

what a good history of the game reminders list that is. +1
Joe Nuxhall, although wiki says it was a WW2 shortage issue.

Re: Doyle MLB ready?
It's just moronic to take your first round pick and rush him to the majors to be in the bullpen for a team not going anywhere.
There is no upside to it.

Not yelling FYou at the batter and dugout. Look the guy is a Cardinal now. Don’t mind his fire but it has to be channeled correctly.CorneliusWolfe wrote: ↑14 Jul 2025 09:08 amNever saw Gibson go skipping off the mound after a strikeout.

It's college baseball guys, not professional baseball.
What he's doing on the mound is not different from what you see college Football and Basketball players doing on the gridiron/court.
He's having fun and his teammates seem to love it.

Yeah, his antics are a lot different than Al Hrabosky pounding his glove to fire himself and maybe the fans up. He won’t last if he doesn’t address his mental approach. Boneheads rarely last.Jatalk wrote: ↑14 Jul 2025 12:38 pmNot yelling FYou at the batter and dugout. Look the guy is a Cardinal now. I hear you. It’s sad but true that good sportsmanship has been largely replaced with taunting and considered fun. I’m betting if he doesn’t start acting like a pro now that he’s a pro, it will inhibit his development.rockondlouie wrote: ↑14 Jul 2025 12:45 pm It's college baseball guys, not professional baseball.

Re: Doyle MLB ready?
Odds are it gets fixed. Either by other teams rushing the mound or his teammates getting tired of being hit by opposing pitchers. But he may turn out to be a problem.CorneliusWolfe wrote: ↑14 Jul 2025 12:47 pmYeah, his antics are a lot different than Al Hrabosky pounding his glove to fire himself and maybe the fans up. I’m guessing so. It had to have been discussed before they even picked the guy. No one wants bonehead distraction or a guy who won’t fit in after investing slot $$ and such a high draft pick.Jatalk wrote: ↑14 Jul 2025 12:53 pmOdds are it gets fixed. Agreed, once he signs that contract he'll act like a pro or get pulled aside real quick by a coach.CorneliusWolfe wrote: ↑14 Jul 2025 12:51 pmI hear you. You don't want to temper that fire too much, just enough not to rile the other team.
You remember being in college and playing ball, we all acted like idiots at times including me.

Re: Doyle MLB ready?
If that is the hope, all the more reason to give him 4 starts or so at Springfield in August. He might realistically make it to the majors next year, but breaking camp seems wildly optimistic. He does need some work on his secondary pitches. 3 weeks in Jupiter working with coaches, a few starts at Springfield and then 7-8 starts in Memphis might be enough. But pitchers tend to need some time working on not tipping pitches, working on motion consistency between pitches and really having 3 good pitches to be a major league starter. Getting all that worked out in 10-15 minor league starts seems optimistic. I really think the Cards window should open in 2027. Wetherholdt, Mathews, McGreevy, Crooks and maybe Roby should all have one years experience in the majors to start 2027. Then if Doyle, Bernal and Baez make the team in 2027, the Cards should have graduated the guys who could be stars to the roster in 2027.rockondlouie wrote: ↑14 Jul 2025 10:36 amYou never know tlrTraveledLessRoad wrote: ↑14 Jul 2025 09:13 amI'm interested in seeing how aggressive they are, as well. Doyle is already better than A. Pallante, perhaps even Libby.
Let's hope he's dynamite in STing and forces his way onto the OD roster.
At worse he's only at Memphis a short while, kicks a z z and is here before Memorial Day.
He's a 21 year old with two years of SEC (the best) ball under his belt.
If he kicks a z z this spring, then I see no reason he can't break camp.
Even Misioroski spent 3.5 years in the Brewers minor league system before making his debut this year. He was a year younger when drafted. BTW, how did the Cards miss on him, with him being a MO boy...
